MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY SYSTEMS ANNOUNCES 34TH CONSECUTIVE QUARTER OF REVENUES AND EARNINGS GROWTH

CLEARWATER, Fla., Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Medical Technology Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: MSYS) reported that for the second quarter ended Sept. 30, 1993, net income increased 26 percent to $645,990 equal to $.17 per share on 3 percent more shares outstanding. Net revenues and services increased to $4.6 million.
Todd E. Siegel, president and CEO, said that this was the company's 34th consecutive quarter of growth. For the six months ended Sept. 30, 1993, net income from operations increased 26 percent to $1.3 million. Net revenues and services increased 21 percent to $8.8 million. Considering the prior quarter's adjustment for FASB No. 109 compliance, primary earnings increased to $.47 per share as compared to $.28 per share for the same six months during fiscal year ending 1993.
During the second quarter, the company continued to expand sales to its customers in the long-term care industry. Net revenues and services included a 26 percent increase in the MTS Systems medication card business, to $2.3 million; $791,000 from Med Tech Laboratories and $1.6 million from the Vangard laboratories pharmaceutical packaging operations. The operating margin in the MTS Systems segment was 36 percent while the operating margin in the Med Tech Laboratories segment increased to 48 percent as the company benefited from its investment in new technology and a reduction in operating expenses. Vangard operating margins were improved to 26 percent through operating efficiencies gained by the introduction of Med Tech's proprietary equipment.
In furtherance of the company's growth, Siegel has announced that the company's Vangard division will introduce and begin taking orders for its pre-filled generic medication punch cards, called "Pre-Pak," at the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists Convention in New Orleans on Nov. 10, 1993. "Pre-Pak" medication cards provide the company's pharmacy customers with both significant cost savings and productivity gains. This introduction allows Vangard the opportunity to sell products to the long-term care market through Med Tech's customer base. The generic drug market in long-term care is estimated to be $500 million per year.
Medical Technology Systems, Inc. of Clearwater, Fla., is the nation's largest supplier of cost-saving medication card supplies, systems and equipment to institutional healthcare pharmacists. Medication cards are a more efficient and economical way for pharmacists to package, and nursing staffs to administer and monitor, patient medication. The company also packages generic pharmaceuticals in unit dose blister packs, manufactures prescription labels and provides clinical laboratory services for physicians.
