MEDICAL GRAPHICS CORPORATION REPORTS SECOND QUARTER SALES AND EARNINGS

ST. PAUL, Minn., July 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Medical Graphics Corporation (NASDAQ: MGCC) announced today sales for the quarter ended June 30, 1993 were $4.0 million, a 10 percent decrease from the $4.4 million recorded in the second quarter of 1992. Net income was $3,613 or $.00 per share, compared to the $123,750 income, or $.05 per share, obtained in the same period in 1992.
Year-to-date sales for the first half of 1993 were $8.3 million, a .6 percent increase from the $8.2 million reported for the first half of the year in 1992. Net income was $171,503, or $.07 per share, compared to the $216,924, or $.09 per share, obtained in the same period in 1992.
"We achieved a 27 percent increase in international sales and a 17 percent increase in service and supplies sales. However, domestic sales decreased, due primarily to purchasing delays in the private physician office segment," said Catherine A. Anderson, president, chairman and chief executive officer. "The factors we are analyzing include the uncertainty among physicians about the impact of pending health care reform proposals and the focus of our sales and marketing efforts in both the fee-for-service and managed care environment," said Anderson.
"We are confident in our future and have taken actions to strengthen our sales management and domestic sales force," said Anderson, "because MedGraphics systems are positioned well for any health care system which encourages cost control through early diagnosis, prevention and cost- effective therapy."
MedGraphics systems provide the objective information needed for hospitals and physicians to improve patient outcome and reduce costs, she said. A number of MedGraphics systems were purchased for outcomes management of cardiovascular procedures by large medical institutions including Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. Dr. John Wilson, director of the Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation Program at Vanderbilt, said, "The information that MedGraphics systems provide allow us to identify which patients are likely to benefit from cardiovascular interventions and determine the most cost-effective therapy to bring about positive outcomes."
Medical Graphics Corporation designs, manufactures and markets non- invasive diagnostic systems for the prevention, early diagnosis and cost-effective treatment of heart and lung disease. From its company headquarters in St. Paul and Dusseldorf, Germany, Medical Graphics does business in 30 countries.
