 MEDICAL COLLEGE OF PENNSYLVANIA ANNOUNCES
 COMMENCEMENT AND HOMECOMING PLANS
PHILADELPHIA, May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The Medical College of Pennsylvania (MCP) will honor 111 medical graduates at its 140th Commencement, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at the Academy of Music, Broad and Locust streets, Philadelphia.
Seven doctor of philosophy and 18 master of science degrees will also be awarded.
Oliver Sacks, M.D., the neurologist who wrote the book "Awakenings," will receive an honorary degree. The book, which portrayed a true story about a successful drug intervention with psychiatric patients, was adapted into a feature film starring Robert DeNiro and Robin Williams in 1991. Sacks is a professor of clinical neurology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. His other books include "Migraine," "Seeing Voices" and "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat."
Other honorary degree recipients include Rosemary Anne Stevens, M.P.H., Ph.D., dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of history and sociology of science at the University of Pennsylvania, and Gail H. Forster, a longtime member of the college's National Board and president of the National Foundation for Women's Health.
The Commencement speaker will be Nancy Gary, M.D. (MCP '62), senior medical advisor to the administrator of the Health Care Financing Administration, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Some 30 awards will recognize graduating students for leadership and excellence in a variety of educational and clinical categories, including the first Clifton Ogburn Award, which honors the outstanding graduate thesis in the name of the former associate dean for graduate studies.
Faculty awards, including the Blockley-Osler Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching and the Lindback Foundation Awards for Distinguished Teaching, will be presented by MCP's Annenberg Dean Leonard L. Ross, Ph.D.
Commencement coincides with Homecoming weekend for more than 200 college alumnae/i who are expected for class reunions, luncheons, campus tours, scientific sessions on diabetes, and the presentation of the Alumnae/i Achievement Award.
Homecoming will also include a reception to dedicate the Alma Dea Morani, M.D., Chair in Surgery at 4 p.m. today in MCP's Kaiser Auditorium, 3300 Henry Ave., East Falls. The $2 million endowed chair honors Morani, an internationally known plastic surgeon and accomplished sculptor, for her role in bringing art into the curriculum and the campus surroundings. The recipient, Joel Roslyn, M.D., will join the college as the new chairman of surgery on July 1.
This year, the college also notes the 20th anniversary of its first male graduates. When the college opened in 1850 as the nation's first medical school for women, there were few or no opportunities for females to become doctors. The college became co-educational and four men graduated in 1969 and 1972, respectively. The Class of '92 has 57 male graduates.
Medical College of Pennsylvania, in the East Falls section of Philadelphia, is a member of Allegheny Health, Education and Research Foundation (AHERF), an academic-based integrated health care delivery system in Pennsylvania. Other Delaware Valley members include Medical College Hospitals, Main Clinical Campus; Medical College Hospitals, Elkins Park Campus; Medical College Hospitals, Bucks County Campus; and St. Christopher's Hospital for Children.
