MEDIA OPPORTUNITIES FOR FOUNDERS DAY AT PITT; BOARD MEETING
AND INSTALLATION HIGHLIGHT 205TH ANNIVERSARY OF PITT
 J. Dennis O'Connor will be installed as the 16th chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh on Friday, Feb. 28, from 1:15 to 3 p.m. in the Carnegie Music Hall, Forbes Ave., Oakland.
The media are invited to attend.
The university's board of trustees will hold its spring meeting earlier that morning, at 8 a.m., in the Assembly Room of the William Pitt Union, followed immediately by a media availability session with O'Connor.
O'Connor's installation is being held on Founders Day, the 205th anniversary of the signing of the charter which created the Pittsburgh Academy, the forerunner of the University of Pittsburgh.
Installations are part of university traditions that date back 800 years to the founding of the University of Paris, and they have been held by institutions around the world for centuries.
According to Pitt Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor Donald Henderson, "Universities hold such symbolic events because they remind us of the unique nature and purpose of universities and why they can outlive governments and nations. The installation of a university chancellor is a commemoration of this cultural and intellectual legacy and of the meaning of education and scholarly endeavor."
The installation will begin with an academic procession featuring presidents from Pitt's regional campuses, presidents from other colleges and universities, hundreds of people from the Pitt community, including deans, directors, faculty and administrators, and presidents of learned and professional societies.
Participants will be dressed in full academic regalia reflecting a history and heritage that can be traced to the medieval universities of the 11th and 12th centuries. They will proceed from The Carnegie's Dinosaur Hall through the Hall of Sculpture to the Carnegie Music Hall foyer and into the auditorium. Photographers may cover the proceedings through the hallways leading to the auditorium.
The installation ceremony will open with greetings to O'Connor from Pittsburgh Mayor Sophie Masloff, Robert M. Rosenzweig, president of the American Association of Universities, and representatives of Pitt's students, faculty, staff, and regional campuses.
John Marous, chairman of Pitt's board, and Henderson, will install the chancellor. The ceremony will conclude with an address by O'Connor and a procession from the auditorium. Copies of the speech will be available at the ceremony.
A reception, open to the university community and the public, will be held in the William Pitt Union Ballroom, Kurtzman Room and Assembly Room, immediately following the ceremony. The media are invited to attend.
Two rows of seating have been made available for the media on the main floor of the Carnegie Music Hall. Television and still photographers may take photos from the aisles and sides of the auditorium. A multbox will be located on the first balcony for radio journalists.
