MEDIA NOTICE QC DATA HOSTS OPENING OF NEW FACILITY

CALGARY, Nov. 16 ~CNW~ - QC DATA INC. will host the official Grand Opening of their new facility at 7210 Blackfoot Trail S.E. on Tuesday, November 17th at 2:00 pm. The totally renovated, 35,000 square foot site will house the Data Conversion~Mapping operations of QC DATA, and also be the headquarters of the recently-formed CANOGGIS DATABANK CORPORATION.
Of particular interest at the opening will be the demonstration of 'smart' car technology, and members of the media will have the opportunity to experience this new system first hand (backgrounder attached).
 Who: QC DATA INC.
 What: Grand Opening
When: Tuesday, November 17, 2:00 pm
 Where: 7210 Blackfoot Trail S.E.
 THE 'SMART' CAR
 ---------------
There is nothing on the exterior of the 'smart' car to suggest there is anything different or unique about it. However, once inside, passengers will immediately notice a 5" colour TV~Computer Display monitor mounted on the dashboard.
The driver will program the destination address (in this case, QC DATA; 7210 Blackfoot Trail SE) into the computer, which will in turn suggest the most efficient route to take (factoring in such data as distance, speed limits, average traffic, traffic lights etc.). An alternate route can also be requested, and the choice rests with the driver.
Once the trip begins, the computer provides video and audio cues and directions for the duration. On-screen, there is a choice of an area map with a blinking cursor indicating position and progress. Alternately, the screen can be set to show only international directional symbols, such as arrows, stop signs, turns etc. Simultaneously, the computer is providing audio cues, so the driver does not have to watch the screen at all times, but can simply listen for the 'tone' indicating new navigational directions on-screen. Later models of the hardware will provide synthesized speech, allowing drivers to listen for verbal commands such as: "turn left at the next corner" through to "you have arrived". Another interesting feature of the system is its ability to provide additional information concerning points of interest on the chosen route; for example, "on your left is City Hall".
Should you make a mistake, or decide to make a quick sidetrip while enroute, you are immediately notified by the computer, which will instantly begin suggesting ways to get back on track.
The 'smart' car works utilizing a combination of compact disc (CD) and geographical positioning system (GPS) technology. Basically, the mapping information is digitally processed by QC DATA, and stored on a CD, which is exactly the same as music CDs found in homes and cars. The CD for the area being travelled is inserted into the computer, which orients itself through a satellite-based GPS system that tells the computer where it is at all times. By using the appropriate CDs and the 'smart' technology, a driver can easily and successfully navigate anywhere in the world covered by the 'footprint' of the satellite.
While this technology has existed for some time, the mapping information has not. The role of QC DATA is to convert existing paper map information into a usable digital form, enabling manufacturers to incorporate 'smart' technology into their vehicles as standard or add-on equipment.
