MEDAR ENTERS INTO JOINT VENTURE IN CHINA

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Medar announced today that it has entered into a joint venture with Shanghai Electric Welding Machine Works, China's largest welding equipment manufacturer, to form Shanghai Medar Welding Equipment Co., Ltd.
This agreement marks the first joint venture of its kind in the welding industry in China, with Medar providing welding controls to complement Shanghai's welding machine systems.
"Through this joint venture, Medar will be positioned to sell our equipment to other machine companies and provide much of the controls needed for China's expansion," said Charles Drake, President and Chairman of Medar, Inc.
"China represents 22 percent of the world's population, with tremendous expansion planned in manufacturing as part of its industrialization efforts. Automotive companies, like Volkswagen and Ford Motor Company, are producing cars in China for a vastly unpenetrated market. Last year, auto plants in China produced 1.08 million vehicles, up 52 percent from 1991.
"However, we are proceeding with some degree of caution. Much of our success in the China market will depend on the credit policies implemented by the central government of China, so we have kept our risk level in the joint venture low."
The joint venture will begin operations near the end of this year, after completion of its 10,000 square foot facility in the Pudong District industrial area near Shanghai, China.
Medar, Inc. offers two unique areas of expertise to the industrial manufacturer: resistance welding controls and machine vision based inspection systems. Medar's resistance welding controls assure weld quality and provide data about the welding process. Machine vision based inspection systems assure consistent quality and are designed for the automatic inspection of compact discs, glass containers, and other manufacturing processes. Medar's common stock trades on the NASDAQ National Market with the symbol MDXR.
