MEAD NAMES NEW CORPORATE OFFICER; PRESIDENT OF GILBERT PAPER

 DAYTON, Ohio, March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Mead Corporation (NYSE: MEA) announced today its board of directors has elected Patricia B. Robinson vice president of corporate strategy and planning. Robinson, formerly president of Mead's Gilbert Paper division, succeeds Ian W. Millar, who was director of corporate strategy and planning. Millar was named president of Mead's Packaging division in January.
 The company also named Peter H. Vogel president of Gilbert Paper, based in Menasha, Wis. Gilbert specializes in high-quality communications papers.
 "Strategy and planning will play a key role in the performance improvement effort already underway at Mead," said Steven C. Mason, Mead's chairman and chief executive officer. "Pat brings impressive operating and strategic planning skills to her new position and solid experience leading change at Mead."
 Robinson is a 15-year veteran of Mead. Prior to joining Gilbert as division president in 1987, she spent 10 years in management and business planning and strategy positions at Mead's Packaging division in Atlanta. She also held positions as plant manager of Mead Packaging's machinery operations and project manager for plastic bottle packaging. Robinson graduated from Duke University with a B.A. degree in economics and received an M.B.A. from the University of Virginia.
 Vogel joined Mead in 1980 and has held positions in financial, corporate and forest products planning. Most recently he was president of the Central Area for Mead's distribution business, Zellerbach. Zellerbach distributes paper, packaging and industrial supplies throughout the U.S. Its Central Area, based in Cincinnati, serves six states and the District of Columbia.
 "Peter brings a solid understanding of both the merchant and paper businesses to Gilbert," Mason said. "Gilbert is an important specialty mill for Mead, one that has made a new mark for itself by producing premium correspondence papers made with recycled fiber."
 Prior to managing the Central Area, Vogel held marketing and general management positions at Zellerbach. In addition, he served four years as Mead Fine Paper's vice president of administration. Vogel received a B.S. degree in industrial and labor relations and an M.B.A. degree in finance from Cornell University.
