MEAD DATA CENTRAL OFFERS FREE JOB SEARCHING THIS SUMMER ON THE LEXIS(R) SERVICE

DAYTON, Ohio, June 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Graduating law students face one of the toughest employment markets in years as a record number of newly minted JDs hit the streets looking for work. But instead of pounding the pavement, many are taking a high-tech approach, turning to online database services to unearth hard-to-find opportunities.
To make job hunting easier, Mead Data Central, Inc., provider of the LEXIS(R)/NEXIS(R) services, is offering law students and unemployed law school alumni free access to the computerized LEXIS "CAREER" Library this summer.
Free access to the LEXIS service, offered to law students throughout the school year, is usually suspended when school is not in session.
With the CAREER Library, students and out-of-work attorneys have access to hundreds of thousands of possible job leads through such sources as the Martindale-Hubbell(R) Law Directory; Legal Support Systems' Employer Directory and Public Interest Employer Directory; Federal Reports' Federal Careers for Attorneys, Federal Law-Related Careers for Attorneys and the 1993 "Plum" Book, which lists law-related jobs available in the Clinton Administration; SPAN Publishing's National Directory of Law Enforcement Administrators and Agencies, and NLADA's Directory of Legal Aid and Defender Offices.
According to the latest study from the National Association of Law Placement, there were a record 39,405 law school graduates in 1992. Of the 30,341 whose employment status was known, only 72.5 percent had found full-time jobs in the profession within the first six months of graduation.
"Today's law student is faced with the daunting task of finding a job in one of the toughest employment markets in recent memory," said Mert McGill, Mead Data Central's vice president of sales and marketing for Legal Information Services. "By offering free access to the CAREER library of the LEXIS service, we hope to provide students and graduates with an invaluable first step in their search for employment."
Since its introduction in April 1992, the CAREER Library has become one of the most widely used of all the LEXIS information files.
Complimentary access to the LEXIS CAREER Library is available to law students and unemployed graduates through August 31. Those interested in obtaining a free ID should contact their school's placement office or LEXIS Customer Service at 800-543-6862.
