MEAD DATA CENTRAL, INC. TO REDUCE HEADQUARTERS STAFF

DAYTON, Ohio, Aug. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of the Mead Corporation's (NYSE: MEAD) previously announced performance improvement program, Mead Data Central, Inc., its electronic publishing subsidiary, will eliminate the jobs of approximately 400 headquarters employees next week.
The provider of the LEXIS(R)/NEXIS(R) services will see approximately $50 million in annualized long-term savings in personnel, facilities, travel, equipment, supplies and various internal services, said Rodney L. Everhart, president of Mead Data Central (MDC). MDC expects this savings to result in a modest benefit to earnings in 1993, and a more significant benefit in 1994 and beyond. The savings will also be used by MDC to make strategic investments in its business over the long term.
"We're undergoing a fundamental change in the way we do business," Everhart said. "MDC is becoming more customer-focused. Earlier this year, for example, we added more than 100 people to our sales and customer support areas. The logical next step is to make better use of our resources by eliminating those headquarters activities not essential to serving our customers.
"MDC will emerge from this performance improvement program strengthened and prepared for accelerated growth for the long term," he said. "This action will in no way slow the plans we have for the introduction of several exciting new products in the coming months."
Mead Data Central has 2,538 full- and part-time employees at its headquarters. Another 1,691 are at field sales offices in the U.S., Canada and Europe, or at four subsidiary companies.
LEXIS is the world's leading full-text computer-assisted legal research service, with caselaw, statutes and specialized law libraries. NEXIS is a computer-assisted electronic information service offering full-text articles from the world's leading news and business sources.
Mead Data Central had sales of $494.8 million in 1992, and reported sales of $262.6 million for the first half ended July 4, 1993, compared to $240.4 million for the first half ending June 28, 1992. MDC is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Mead Corporation, a leader in forest products and electronic publishing. Both companies have headquarters in Dayton, Ohio.
