MDSI MOBILE DATA SOLUTIONS INC. TO IMPLEMENT A COMPUTER-AIDED DISPATCH SYSTEM FOR EL PASO ELECTRIC COMPANY, TEXAS

RICHMOND, British Columbia, Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- MDSI Mobile Solutions Inc. (MDSI) today announced the signing of a contract with the El Paso Electric Co., a progressive electric utility in El Paso, Texas, for the implementation of a $460,000 (U.S.) Utility Computer-Aided Dispatch (U-CAD) System. With the system, field employees will be equipped with computer terminals in their vehicles. Rather than receiving field service orders on written cards or by voice radio, they will receive the information electronically via data-over-radio.
The field employees who will be using the new automated system include Linemen, Outside Ordermen, Meter Technicians, Collectors and Field Service Representatives. The field orders that will be automated include new service installations, meter change outs, shut-offs, reconnections, and meter investigations.
El Paso Electric has been investigating such systems since the mid- 1980's. "There has been a constant effort to improve customer service while increasing the efficiency of our field crew," said Dean Jacobson, assistant vice president of Information Services. "Currently, when a customer requests a change to an order that is already in the field, it takes more than six steps and sometimes we don't affect the change in time. With MDSI's U-CAD System, all six steps will be reduced to one. With El Paso Electric, providing the best customer service is the bottom line."
Seven representatives from El Paso Electric visited installations of computer-aided dispatch systems across the United States and Canada. The one they were the most impressed with was the system at BC Hydro in Vancouver. MDSI provided the dispatching and field terminal software for that system. "When we saw that the functionality was what we were looking for, and when we were told of how successful the installation was, we were convinced," said Jacobson.
The MDSI Utility Computer-Aided Dispatch System is the most widely used system of its type by utility and cable television companies across North America. It achieves the objective of effective real-time management of fleet and service order activity by providing accurate and timely information to and from dispatchers and field service personnel. It facilitates order load balancing to achieve service schedule commitments.
The MDSI U-CAD System runs on IBM RS6000 computers under the UNIX (AIX) operating system. MDSI develops the software and provides complete systems integration services. MDSI personnel represent some of the original developers and innovators of mobile data technology and computerized dispatching.
MDSI is a Vancouver-based company jointly owned by Equity Investment Corp. and MDSI management.
