MDI, A SYBASE COMPANY, AND PLATINUM technology, inc., JOIN FORCES TO INTEGRATE DB2 INTO INDUSTRY-LEADING SYBASE REPLICATION SERVER SOLUTION

Replication Agent for DB2 Extends the Reach of Replication Server,
Allowing Users to Replicate Corporate Data Between DB2
 and Other Data Servers
NEW YORK, Dec. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- DB EXPO '94 -- MDI(TM), A Sybase Company and PLATINUM technology, inc. today announced a new, jointly developed mainframe data replication product -- Replication Agent(TM) for DB2 -- which delivers DB2 data to the SYBASE(R) Replication Server(TM) for enterprise-wide replication. This product will be sold exclusively by Sybase. The Replication Agent for DB2 will enter beta this week and will be generally available in the second quarter of 1995.
The Replication Agent for DB2 extracts changes from DB2 logs and transmits transaction information to Replication Server for delivery to replicate sites. Replication Server and the Replication Agent for DB2 will provide a solution for those customers who wish to update corporate data on the mainframe and reflect the changes in SQL Server or other data targets. This technology will allow them to off-load mainframe workload and distribute data more easily in a client/server environment.
Mainframe Replication Critical to Large Enterprise Customers
"The ability to replicate data wherever it is in the enterprise is critical to our large enterprise customers," said MDI President Michael H. Forster. "They have told us that they need this capability in order to maintain the high performance of their OLTP systems, the accuracy of their decision support systems and their overall competitive edge in the marketplace. We're very pleased to be working with PLATINUM technology to develop the Replication Agent for DB2 and to further deliver on the promise of Replication Server and SYBASE Enterprise CONNECT(TM)."
 Results of the Partnership
The development of the Replication Agent for DB2 was a cooperative effort leveraging PLATINUM's DB2 expertise and MDI's interoperability expertise. The Replication Agent for DB2 will use the PLATINUM Replication Extract(TM) program to read the DB2 logs, extract changes from those logs and supply those changes to Replication Server. The Replication Agent for DB2 will be exclusively marketed and supported by Sybase.
In addition, MDI has developed a generic API which will enable the future development of additional mainframe Replication Agents.
"With this alliance, PLATINUM technology makes public its plans to partner our leading relational tools with Sybase's advanced technology," said Paul Humenansky, PLATINUM technology's chief operations officer and executive vice president for development. "Specifically, we'll leverage our warehousing products in conjunction with the SYBASE Warehouse WORKS(TM) strategy to provide a unified, extensive facility for moving and replicating mainframe data to Sybase and other servers."
 Sybase Replication Server
Sybase's Replication Server is the first solution to address the need for cost-effective distributed systems so that data can be shared among different operational and decision support environments without impacting business performance. Replication Server reliably delivers data where and when it's needed, protects transactional integrity and automatically synchronizes systems after failure. The Replication Agent for DB2 extends the ability of the mainframe to play a significant role in the client/server environment, by allowing organizations to retain control over DB2 data and distribute it safely to remote locations. Replication Server is in use by over 550 customers making it the most widely implemented solution for enterprise-wide replication.
Replication Agent for DB2 Enhances the Reach and Power of
 Enterprise CONNECT(TM)
The Replication Agent for DB2 now allows mainframe sites to leverage the strengths of Replication Server for enterprise-wide replication. Replication Server is part of Enterprise CONNECT, Sybase's comprehensive solution for interoperability. Launched last May, Enterprise CONNECT provides a comprehensive suite of data access, data movement and interoperability management products designed to help customers integrate their heterogeneous environments and maximize the strengths of both desktop and mainframe environments.
