MDA FUND-RAISER SET CLARK AND CAMPBELL TO RECEIVE HONORS

NASHVILLE, Tenn., April 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The eighth annual Mary & Harry Zimmerman Memorial Dinner to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) has been set for Thursday, June 17, at Nashville's Opryland Hotel. Honorees of this year's event are Chris Clark of WTVF- NewsChannel 5 and Kevin P. Campbell, Ph.D. of Howard Hughes Medical Center and the University of Iowa College of Medicine, according to Raymond Zimmerman, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Service Merchandise Company, Inc. (NYSE: SME). Zimmerman made the announcement today at a company breakfast to kick off Service Merchandise's annual fund-raising campaign for MDA.
Clark and Campbell will accept the Harry Zimmerman Memorial Award and the Service Merchandise Leadership Award respectively at the dinner. The annual dinner is second only to the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon as MDA's largest single fund-raiser, as it has raised $1 million each of the last four years.
The Harry Zimmerman Memorial Award recognizes Clark, vice president and news director of NewsChannel 5, for his many philanthropic endeavors. The award is named after the late "Mr. Harry," founder of Service Merchandise, who dedicated much of his life to raising money for MDA.
In addition to his regular work as Nashville's favorite television anchor, Clark serves as co-host of the local Labor Day Telethon which benefits MDA. Clark also has presided over the Zimmerman Memorial Dinner as master of ceremonies since its beginning in 1986.
Clark has special interests regarding other Nashville organizations too, as he has served on the board of directors for many groups including: the Green Hills YMCA, the downtown Rotary Club, the Nashville Zoo, and the MDA. Additionally, he has been very active in First Amendment issues, frequently going to court to win the right to broadcast certain news events, and serving on numerous boards and committees which deal with media rights.
Clark will join a distinguished list of previous recipients of the Harry Zimmerman Memorial Award: Raymond Zimmerman in 1987, Jerry Lewis in 1988, Sammy Davis Jr. in 1989, Les Wexner in 1990, Norm Crosby in 1991 and The Gatlin Brothers; Larry, Rudy and Steve in 1992.
Campbell will be the fourth recipient of the Service Merchandise Leadership Award which recognizes a leading researcher in the fight against neuromuscular disease.
Campbell, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator and Professor of Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Iowa College of Medicine, is at the forefront of world-wide research in the study of dystrophin. Dystrophin is the protein that's either missing or doesn't function properly in two dystrophies that generally strike children, Duchenne and Becker. Campbell's purification and characterization of this protein have solved may mysteries surrounding those specific diseases and other muscle disease as well.
The progress that Campbell has made continues to spark additional interest and research into the treatment for neuromuscular disease.
The morning meeting was also the venue Zimmerman chose to announce Service Merchandise's 1993 MDA campaign fund-raising goal of $2.7 million. In addition to the dinner, Service Merchandise will raise money through nationwide special event activities and an associate payroll deduction program. The company has been a National Corporate Sponsor of MDA since 1978.
Service Merchandise is "America's Leading Jeweler" and the nation's number one catalog store retailer, currently operating 371 Service Merchandise stores and two Kids Central USA stores in 37 states. In 1992, the Nashville-based company reported sales in excess of $3.7 billion.
