MD-90 MAIDEN FLIGHT FEATURES ROHR NACELLES

CHULA VISTA, Calif., Feb. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The McDonnell Douglas MD-90, powered by advanced new engines with Rohr (NYSE: RHR) nacelles, including thrust reversers, flew for the first time Feb. 22 in a highly successful mission lasting four hours and 56 minutes. The nacelle is the aerodynamic structure that surrounds an aircraft engine.
The world's newest commercial twin jet transport now enters a flight test certification program with the International Aero Engines V2500 engines -- the quietest and cleanest jet powerplants in their class. International Aero Engines is a consortium of five major propulsion companies in the United States, Europe and Japan.
Rohr, under a 20-year contract signed in 1990 with the engine company, has delivered initial units to support ground testing and the first flight test aircraft. The basic contract calls for 1,000 nacelles with production deliveries beginning in 1994.
Rohr designs, integrates, manufactures and supports engine nacelle systems for commercial, military and business aircraft. The company also manufactures solid rocket motor casings for the Titan IV launch vehicle. Rohr, headquartered in Chula Vista, has facilities in the United States and Europe.
