MD EXPLORER IS NEW NAME FOR MCDONNELL DOUGLAS' MDX
LAS VEGAS, Nev., March 22, 1992 -- MD Explorer is the new name for

the world's most revolutionary helicopter.
The helicopter, a twin-engine, eight-place aircraft, features the latest developments in cockpit avionics and fabrication materials. And, because it utilizes McDonnell Douglas' exclusive NOTAR(TM) anti-torque and directional control system, it doesn't have a tail rotor.
The new rotorcraft, which has been known under its developmental name, MDX, for several years, is scheduled for first flight in the fourth quarter of 1992 and first customer deliveries about a year later.
"MD Explorer was selected as the permanent name because it reflects the true spirit and intent of the helicopter," said Dean C. Borgman, who had headed the development program for several years and who is now president of McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Co.
"The name indicates that the helicopter is a trail blazer, which it is, for both the company and the operators who will fly it," Borgman said.
"The helicopter is bold and daring in its concept and design and capable of reaching new prominence in its operations," he said.
"It will go places and do things most other helicopters can't go or do and it will be easier for the pilot at the controls to accomplish the mission at hand," he said. "That's the true spirit behind the name we have selected."
"Additionally," Borgman said, "MD Explorer is also an appropriate appellation for the visionary men and women who conceived it, designed it and are building it.
"It is an especially appropriate title for the helicopter operator 'blue team' that, through their guidance, literally invented the MD Explorer."
Borgman said the name "MD Explorer" is a natural extension of the engineering title used for the aircraft in its development period. "This allows the company to profit from the recognition achieved through the use of MDX as a name for more than three years," he said.
