MCN UNIT AND GREAT WEST ENERGY FORM PARTNERSHIP TO MARKET NATURAL GAS

DETROIT, Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- CoEnergy Trading Company, a subsidiary of MCN Corporation (NYSE: MCN), and Toronto-based Great West Energy Ltd. have signed a letter of intent to form CoWest Energy, a Canadian partnership that will market and sell natural gas in Canada and the northeast United States. Initial plans call for MCN to deliver up to 50 million cubic feet of natural gas per day to eastern Canadian markets beginning this winter.
The partnership will compete for new gas markets created by the recent restructuring of the natural gas industry, including expanding markets for both MCN and Great West by supplying U.S.-produced natural gas to Canadian markets and Canadian-produced natural gas to U.S. markets. In addition, CoWest Energy will invest in Canadian gas-related projects including storage, production, pipelines and cogeneration.
"The formation of CoWest Energy combines the marketing expertise of the partner companies which will create an immediate and significant new option for gas consumers on both sides of the border," said Bruce E. Chandler, president of Great West Energy Ltd. "It provides our existing clientele with additional security of supply through our partner's storage facilities in Michigan and a competitive U.S.-sourced gas supply. It also provides new market opportunities for Great West's Canadian producer network."
"We are pleased with this partnership, which gives us the ability to combine the supply strengths of the two companies to support a market which will increasingly depend on supply both from Western Canada and the U.S.," said Donald Samburg, president of CoEnergy Trading Company. "This alliance allows MCN to use its supply expertise combined with its storage, transmission and other assets to serve Canadian businesses in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec."
MCN Corporation is the holding company for MCN Investment Corporation, which owns subsidiaries in the gas services, computer operations services and natural gas technology businesses; for Michigan Consolidated Gas Company (MichCon), a natural gas distribution, transmission and storage company serving 1.1 million customers in more than 500 communities throughout Michigan; and for Citizens Gas Fuel Company, a Michigan natural gas utility; Great West Energy is Canada's largest market aggregator with over 21,000 corporate clients throughout Canada and the United States. They are a subsidiary of Bow Valley Energy (AMEX: BVI; Toronto, Montreal), a senior international oil and gas production company with assets of $1.3 billion and headquartered in Calgary.
