MCN, TWO OTHERS TO CONVERT GOLF CARS TO NATURAL GAS

DETROIT, Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Michigan Consolidated Gas Company (MichCon), a subsidiary of MCN Corporation (NYSE: MCN), E-Z-GO Textron and Modern Engineering will collaborate to convert 80 golf cars to run on natural gas. The conversion will be completed by late spring for use at The Orchards Golf Club in Washington, Mich. This will be the first fleet of low-pressure natural gas golf cars in the country.
The golf cars will run on an adsorbed natural gas (ANG) system, a low-pressure natural gas storage process. The low-pressure system potentially could reduce the cost of on-board storage and refueling systems, making it cost effective for use in other similar fleet applications.
MichCon will provide the technological expertise for creating the natural gas storage system; G-Tec, another MCN subsidiary, will provide the refuel hardware; Augusta, Ga.-based E-Z-GO will manufacture the golf car and powertrain; and, Warren, Mich.-based Modern Engineering will convert the cars to the natural gas system.
MCN tested a natural gas golf car at a local course last summer with encouraging results, said Rai P. Bhargava, MichCon vice president- marketing. "We were excited by results of that initial testing. The natural gas vehicle ran longer than the electric version and refueling time was quicker. We will conduct similar tests throughout this fleet's use which we believe will ultimately show natural gas golf cars to be less costly to operate and maintain than either electric or gasoline versions."
"We are excited to collaborate in this venture," said Joseph A. Lang, E-Z-GO vice president of engineering. "The environmental soundness, as well as the ease of operation and maintenance, make natural gas golf cars a potentially viable product for the future."
The fleet of 80 golf cars will be tested at The Orchards Golf Club, a Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed course opening this summer. Ronald K. Dalby, president of The Orchards Golf Development Company, looks forward to using the new cars.
"We believe the natural gas cars will perform better than electric cars on the demanding terrain of The Orchards based on previous tests of a natural gas golf car," said Dalby. "Additionally, because natural gas burns cleaner than gasoline, there are less pollution-causing emissions and less wear and tear on the car's engine."
MCN is also continuing its research and development of ANG technology for applications in industrial and transportation vehicles, such as cars and trucks.
MCN Corporation is the holding company for MichCon, a natural gas distribution, transmission and storage company serving more than 1 million customers in 465 communities through Michigan; for Citizens Gas Fuel Company, a Michigan gas utility; and for MCN Investment Corporation which owns subsidiaries in the gas services, gas storage services, computer operations services and natural gas technology businesses.
