MCI WINS BULL HN INFORMATION SYSTEMS DATA COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK
RYE BROOK, N.Y., Jan. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: MCIC) today announced a contract to provide a data communications network to Bull HN Information Systems Inc. of Billerica, Mass., a subsidiary of Compagnie des Machines Bull, a Paris-based multi- national manufacturer of a broad range of computer systems.
According to the terms of the multi-million, three-year agreement, MCI is providing Bull with private lines for its custom-designed data network tying domestic sales and services offices in 42 locations to regional hubs in Boston, Phoenix, Atlanta and Chicago. MCI, in conjunction with other international telecommunications operators, also is providing private line services from the United States to international locations in Paris, London, Toronto and Sydney. The MCI T-1 circuits to Paris and Toronto are 1.544 mega-bits-per-second (Mbps) and carry both private data and voice traffic. The international circuit to Paris is provided via the TAT-8 digital fiber-optic communications cable, connecting North America to the continent via France and England.
Laurence Cranwell, the director of telecommunications for Bull HN Information Systems Inc., said, "This data backbone network represents a large step forward in completing the physical backbone portion of our communications network, which is a strategic component of our company's turnaround plan."
Jonathan Crane, president of MCI Eastern Division, said, "This contract with Bull draws on our international capability and demonstrates MCI's ongoing commitment to provide our customers with global telecommunications services. By working together with global carriers to connect the international data network, we are continuing to build on our strategic partner relationships within the European Economic Community."
"We selected MCI as the U.S. carrier for our international circuits," said Cranwell, "based on MCI's demonstrated ability to work with us and our foreign carriers for successful implementation and ongoing provisioning of reliable services. The network was turned over on the expected due date, allowing us to start the projected cost saving and provide reliable, quality services to our international internal user community," he stated.
