MCI WINS $30 MILLION AGREEMENT WITH MELVILLE CORPORATION FOR TELECOMMUNICATIONS SERVICES

RYE BROOK, N.Y., April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) announced today it has signed an exclusive five year, $30 million agreement with Melville Corporation (NYSE: MES), one of the nation's largest specialty retailers, to provide a wide array of inbound and outbound telecommunications services, including advanced 800 services.
Melville will use MCI's 800 Service and Vnet, a virtual private network service, for outbound domestic and international voice traffic connecting approximately 8,000 locations, according to the terms of the agreement. Melville will significantly reduce transaction costs with a new Vnet application for credit and check authorization processing. Melville will also use MCI's location-level billing which provides detailed cost information for store, district, region and corporate levels, and improves cost tracking and accountability. MCI will also provide Vnet Calling Cards customized for each of Melville's 12 divisions.
Melville will use MCI Enhanced Voice Services' Enhanced Call Router (ECR) to process calls for its five-location internal travel agency. They will also use the advanced ECR feature called TNT Service (Takeback and Transfer), which allows 800 calls to be transferred seamlessly from one travel center to any of the other centers nationwide without incurring new connect charges or making the caller hang up and redial. Also included in the agreement is MCI Forum, an audio conference service.
"This exclusive agreement for inbound and outbound voice service with MCI reflects Melville's confidence in MCI's people and network. Since our first contract was signed with MCI in 1986, MCI has continuously provided the best possible service to support our business imperatives," said John Mitchell, chief information officer of Melville Corporation.
