MCI TO PROVIDE GLOBAL COMMUNICATIONS SERVICE
 TO BAXTER INTERNATIONAL INC.
WASHINGTON, March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) today announced that Baxter International Inc. (NYSE: BAX) has selected the company to implement and manage Baxter's international private data network linking 71 locations in 34 countries under a proposed three-year agreement estimated to be worth approximately $10 million. MCI was selected after completing a 90-day pilot program in which it competed with other vendors.
MCI will provide its Global Communications Service (GCS), serving as the single point of contact for the design, management, administration and customized billing of Baxter's international network. This will encompass an end-to-end managed X.25 packet data network, network protocol conversion, customer premise equipment, in- country support and a private electronic mail system between Baxter's U.S. locations and 34 countries in Europe, the Pacific Rim and South America.
MCI will serve as the sole project manager and will use Infonet, a GCS service provider jointly owned by MCI and 10 international telecommunications administrations, to provide X.25 network service and physical components.
"MCI welcomes this opportunity to further our longstanding relationship with Baxter and work with them in the development and operation of their international network," said Eugene Eidenberg, MCI executive vice president.
Baxter cited MCI's reliability, strong international communications offerings and its relationships with leading overseas telecommunications providers as primary reasons for its selection of the firm.
"Baxter considers MCI to be a strategic supplier of telecommunications services. We are pleased to have MCI develop and implement an international network to support Baxter's international communications needs," said Ken Yorgensen, Baxter's director of corporate telecommunications.
MCI has been providing domestic and international long distance services to Baxter since 1988. Among these are MCI's virtual private network (Vnet) service, MCI 800 Service, MCI Card and data services, including international private lines.
MCI established GCS in 1991 to assist U.S.-based transnational corporations in the design, management and operation of their global networks.
The Baxter international network will draw upon MCI's GCS program as the single point of contact for such services as network management and provisioning; equipment integration and testing; coordinated service ordering; customized trouble reporting and management systems 24 hours a day, seven days a week; and customized billing and coordinated administration services for monitoring operations and performance on an on-going, worldwide basis.
To meet Baxter's requirements, "Infonet's international communications backbone and support organization will be used as the foundation for Baxter's worldwide network," said Jose A. Collazo, president of Infonet.
"The result is a cost effective solution that will accommodate Baxter's future growth requirements in terms of increased international coverage and bandwidth."
Under the GCS program, MCI has operating relationships with 24 leading overseas correspondents around the world, including Infonet, with whom it works to provide GCS services to meet specific customer requirements.
Based in Deerfield, Ill., Baxter International Inc. is the leading worldwide manufacturer and marketer of health-care products, systems and services. It offers more than 120,000 products to health-care providers in 100 countries.
MCI, with 1991 revenue of approximately $8.4 billion, is the second largest long distance provider in the United States. The company owns and operates one of the world's largest all digital networks to provide a full range of domestic and international voice, data, messaging and electronic mail services to businesses, residences and government agencies.
