MCI TO BUILD NEW DATA CENTER IN MARYLAND

MCI TO BUILD NEW DATA CENTER IN MARYLAND
BALTIMORE, March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI Communications Corporation

(NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) today announced plans to open an advanced data center in Perryman, Md., early next year, that will be a high-tech showcase for the latest innovations in communications technology.
Construction on the highly automated 60,000 square foot facility -- MCI's second largest in the country -- is scheduled to begin in May, and the company is planning to invest over $150 million in building and equipment by the end of 1993. Currently, MCI operates a major switching center in Perryman that handles over two million calls per day.
"We are delighted with MCI's decision to locate this high-tech facility in Maryland," said Gov. William Donald Schaefer. "This Fortune 500 company's contribution to our tax base will be substantial, and the jobs created in the construction of the center will put a lot of Marylanders to work."
According to Richard T. Liebhaber, executive vice president and group executive for MCI, "Perryman was selected because it could accommodate our business needs and provide a cost effective base of operations, as well as a pleasant working environment for our people and their families."
The new center will combine network management and data processing functions, and will use the latest fiber optic technology, including optical and magnetic disks capable of eventually storing 8 terrabytes, or 8 trillion bytes of data -- the equivalent of over 220,000 sets of encyclopedias.
In addition to revenue processing, billing and order processing for MCI customers in eleven states, the data center will handle problem management and restoration for the company's nationwide digital network.
The state-of-the-art equipment to be installed includes two ES9000/900 computers -- IBM's largest -- for data processing; 12 robotic tape silos that hold 5-6 thousand tapes, and can find and mount or dismount and file a tape in 30 seconds; plus air conditioning units capable of cooling 350 homes and enough emergency electrical generating capacity to power a small city.
The data center will require few technicians for operation and will make extensive use of a new optical technology called ESCON optical fiber channels. These channels allow data to be transferred at the rate of 18 Megabytes per second, or four times faster than conventional copper wire channels. ESCON also allows up to 60 kilometers between the Central Processing Unit and other data storage equipment, which is 500 times more distance than before, resulting in greater flexibility in locating additional data storage facilities.
MCI Communications Corporation, with 1991 revenue of approximately $8.4 billion, is the second largest long distance provider in the United States. MCI supplies a full range of voice and data telecommunications services to business and residential customers, and government agencies.
