MCI SIGNS $31 MILLION CONTRACT TO PROVIDE 800 SERVICE TO SKYTEL CORP.
RYE BROOK, N.Y., Dec. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: MCIT) announced today that it has signed a multi- year agreement with SkyTel Corp., a subsidiary of Mtel (NASDAQ: MTEL), the country's leading nationwide paging company, to provide MCI 800 Service valued at over $31 million. Under the agreement, SkyTel becomes one of MCI's largest commercial 800 service customers.
The two companies also agreed to work cooperatively on marketing programs involving product development, joint advertising and lead sharing.
"This agreement is a great opportunity for both companies," said David W. Garrison, president of the Washington D.C.-based SkyTel Corp. "It secures SkyTel's position as the only nationwide messaging company directly providing the convenience of 800 number service to its customers. Additionally, our new marketing association with MCI should spur product and marketing innovations as we expand domestically and internationally."
Said Jonathan Crane, president of MCI Eastern Division, "The SkyTel- MCI agreement is a natural fit. Both companies have been pioneers in bringing advanced and cost-effective communication services to today's mobile society. We will not only continue to provide SkyTel with innovative and comprehensive 800 service, but will also seek to develop, promote and market new products that expand the universal availability and access of SkyTel's services to its customers."
SkyTel currently offers its users four primary toll-free numbers which are carried over the MCI network. They are: "800-SKY-PAGE," for the SkyPager national message network; "800-SKY-TALK," for the company's nationwide voice-mail system; "800-SKY-WORD," for the company's nationwide alphanumeric service which transmits e-mail messages from a computer keyboard; and "800-SKY-USER," a customer service hotline. The SkyTel system, which relies on a combination of computer, satellite and radio transmission technologies, provides roaming subscribers with virtually instant messages via the 931 MHz frequency, one of three nationwide frequencies licensed by the FCC for nationwide messaging.
The advanced management features of MCI's 800 Service allow SkyTel to balance traffic between its national hubs located in Washington, D.C. and Jackson, Miss. Additionally, MCI provides SkyTel with 800 service coverage for its customers traveling in Canada.
MCI will also install a digital microwave link from SkyTel's Washington, D.C., national messaging control computer to MCI's terminal center in Arlington, Va. The link will be used to provide back-up in the event of emergencies.
SkyTel is the principal subsidiary of Mobile Telecommunication Technologies Corp. (Mtel), which is headquartered in Jackson, Miss. Mtel's businesses include paging and voice messaging services in the United States; nationwide paging services in the United Kingdom; an investment in American Mobile Satellite Corporation (AMSC); air-to- ground and marine telecommunication systems; telephone answering service operations; and a digital microwave system serving Southern California.
