MCI REPORTS RECORD ANNUAL REVENUE AND EARNINGS

WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) today reported strong fourth quarter results and record revenue and earnings for the year, resulting from a 15 percent annual traffic growth.
-- Fourth quarter 1992 revenue was $2.76 billion, up 13 percent over fourth quarter 1991 revenue of $2.44 billion. Traffic was up 14 percent over the same quarter last year. Full year 1992 revenue was $10.56 billion, up 11 percent over 1991 revenue of $9.49 billion.
-- Fourth quarter 1992 earnings increased to $160 million, or 60 cents per common share, versus $137 million, or 52 cents per common share in the year ago quarter. Full year earnings for 1992 were $589 million, or $2.21 per common share, compared with $522 million, or $2.01 per common share, in 1991.
"MCI had an outstanding quarter, capping a record year in which the company reached annual revenue of over $10 billion for the first time in its 25-year history," according to Daniel F. Akerson, president and chief operating officer. "Our investments in innovative technology, creative marketing and

superior customer service have paid off decisively, and continue to differentiate MCI from its competitors."
MCI can point to many successes that contributed to a great year, said Akerson. MCI's Friends & Family, the company's flagship residential calling program, has attracted over 10 million customers since its introduction in March 1991, and continues to build strong brand name awareness and customer loyalty. Major contract wins, such as the $1 billion dollar multi-year agreement with the FAA to provide communications for the nation's air traffic control system and a $250 million dollar multi-year contract with Citicorp, clearly reflect MCI's strength in the highly competitive domestic market. MCI's success in forging an alliance with the Stentor companies of Canada, will result in a seamless intelligent network between the United States and Canada and is indicative of the company's standing in the international telecommunications market.
"Our industry is healthy and vibrant," said Akerson. "MCI plans to continue to build market share profitably by focusing on our core business while strategically positioning the company for the future."
During 1993, MCI will focus on further developing its 800 service offerings to take full advantage of 800 Portability, and will continue to expand its data products. Emphasis will be placed on expanding the company's international reach, possibly through additional Stentor-like agreements, and MCI will continue to focus on new technologies such as Personal Communications Services (PCS).
During the fourth quarter of 1992, MCI recorded revenue, less expenses, of $56 million from the previously announced intelligent network licensing agreement with Stentor.
In the second quarter of 1992, MCI announced the realignment of its business market units from a geographic focus to one based on market orientation. The company recorded one-time costs of $47 million during the fourth quarter of 1992 that were largely the result of this reorganization.
As announced in the first quarter of 1992, and to conform with recent changes in industry reporting practices, MCI has reclassified payments made to foreign telephone companies for calls made from the United States by MCI's customers. These payments, which had previously been classified as direct reductions of revenue, are now classified as telecommunications expense. Income from operations and net income are not affected. The financial results announced today reflect this change, as will all future financial reports.
Headquartered in Washington, MCI offers a full range of domestic and global telecommunications services through one of the world's largest state-of-the-art networks. With 1992 revenue of over $10 billion, the company is the second largest long distance provider in the United States and has more than 60 overseas offices in 55 countries.
