MCI INTRODUCES SUBSTANTIAL SAVINGS TO INDIVIDUALS WITH HEARING
 AND SPEECH DISABILITIES
WASHINGTON, June 10 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) is responding to the needs of individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech disabled by offering substantial savings on all interstate calls using a Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD). MCI residential customers who use a TDD to communicate with other TDD users will receive a 13 percent discount off MCI's regularly low rates, 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week, on all interstate long distance calls.
TDD users transmit conversations by placing the telephone handset on a cradle on the TDD. These conversations are typed back and forth and typically take longer than spoken conversations. "Due to the time factor, MCI felt a strong desire to provide TDD users with additional savings," said Timothy F. Price, senior vice president, MCI Consumer and Commercial Markets. "MCI is committed to making TDD calls more affordable for our customers."
MCI residential customers may call MCI to request a form to obtain written certification of their hearing or speech disability. Certification may be supplied by a doctor, audiologist, speech pathologist or federal or state agency. Once approved, individuals will automatically receive monthly discounts.
"About 4 million people have disabilities which used to preclude them from using the telephone," added Price. "Deaf, hard of hearing and speech disabled customers can now experience a new freedom in communications."
"MCI has come to recognize the needs of the deaf and hard of hearing communities," said Barry Siebert, executive director, Deafness Education and Advocacy Foundation (D.E.A.F., Inc.). "I am extremely pleased that MCI is offering such large discounts to TDD users."
For more information residential customers may call MCI customer service at 800-444-3333 for voice assistance. TDD customers may dial 800-333-0700 for assistance via TDD. In-state discounts are also available for MCI residential customers in some states.
In addition to TDD discount service, MCI has been awarded contracts to provide Telecommunications Relay Services (TRS) for users of Telecommunications Devices for the Deaf (TDDs) in Florida, Arkansas and Wisconsin. TRS communication assistants convey conversations between a TDD user and a standard voice phone user by alternatively verbalizing the typed TDD text and typing the spoken word.
Friends & Family, MCI's most popular savings plan, offers a 20 percent bonus savings to customers who call other MCI customers in their Calling Circles. MCI's Friends & Family savings may be used in addition to the TDD discount. Friends & Family is free and available 24 hours-a-day.
