AUBURNDALE, Fla., Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) officially opened its $3 million, 15,000-square-foot major switching junction expansion at 210 Recker Highway with grand opening ceremonies today.
Located at Recker Highway and U.S. 92, the MCI major switching junction serves as MCI's switching nerve center for central Florida and is the largest MCI switching facility in Florida.
With the expansion, the Auburndale Junction is expected to increase its calling traffic volume over the next two years from 2 million calls per day to more than 3.5 million calls per day.
"Auburndale will become a key MCI telecommunications hub," said Alan Allred, manager of central Florida network operations for MCI. "The Auburndale switching facility uses all-digital switching equipment to route traffic over fiber-optic superhighways."
The Auburndale Junction is also one of six MCI major switching facilities nationally serving as a pilot site for public network enhanced voice systems technology.
The junction is staffed by 60 MCI technical specialists and management employees.
MCI owns and operates the world's second-largest communications network, employing advanced fiber optics, digital microwave, satellite and digital switching technologies.
