MCI GRANTS $83,000 TO UCCS FOR JOINT RESEARCH PROJECT
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., July 20, /PRNewswire/ -- MCI

Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) has awarded an $83,000 grant to the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs to work closely with the company in developing future capabilities for its state-of-the-art communications network. It is the first major research agreement coordinated by the Colorado Institute for Technology Transfer and Implementation (CITTI) between UCCS and local industry.
"UCCS is well equipped to handle a project of this magnitude," said MCI's James L. Zucco Jr., senior vice president of systems engineering. "UCCS has considerable expertise in advanced telecommunications, and its close location to MCI's Systems Engineering group will allow intense collaboration with our engineers."
Edward Chow, UCCS associate professor of computer science, has an extensive background in telecommunications networks and will serve as principal researcher on the project.
"This joint research program is exactly the kind of situation that CITTI aims to promote as part of its technology transfer charter," said Dwayne Nuzum, chancellor of UCCS. "MCI systems engineers will gain access to our staff's world-class capability in a technical arena of great importance. In return, our faculty and students will have the opportunity to interact with and learn from some of the best systems engineers in the world."
MCI Communications Corporation, headquartered in Washington, provides a full range of global telecommunications services to businesses, residences and government agencies. With 1991 revenue of approximately $9.5 billion, the company owns and operates the world's second largest communications network, employing advanced fiber optics, digital microwave, satellite, and digital switching technologies.
