MCI EXPANDS HYPERSTREAM FRAME RELAY TO UNITED KINGDOM

DALLAS, May 17 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) announced today that it was extending its HyperStream Frame Relay data service to the United Kingdom.
Announced here at the ICA COMNET DALLAS '93 trade show, HyperStream International Frame Relay, a global services offering, will interconnect customer locations in the United States to customer locations in the United Kingdom. MCI will support customers in the United Kingdon from its office in London. An expansion to Japan is also planned, with customers supported by Kokusai Denshin Denwa Company, Ltd. (KDD). HyperStream Frame Relay International will become available for the United Kingdom in September.
In March, MCI and Stentor, an alliance of Canada's major telephone companies, announced that they would integrate MCI HyperStream Frame Relay service with the Stentor companies' frame relay service. Customers in Canada will be supported by Stentor companies.
"MCI's strategic direction for HyperStream International services is to provide customers with the same feature functionality as MCI offers domestically as well as an integrated technological migration path from frame relay to SMDS to ATM. Eventually we will offer these services on an interoperable basis," said K. Paul Singh, MCI's vice president of global marketing.
HyperStream International Frame Relay will provide business customers with a single point of contact for ordering, billing and customer support; flexible billing options; continuous bursting up to the full access channel rate; and Permanent Virtual Circuits (PVC) at speeds of 16, 32, 48, 64 and 128 Kbps.
"HyperStream International is a true seamless frame relay network offering," said Singh. "It provides simultaneous connectivity to multiple customer sites from a single frame relay port. Additionally, the network uses multiple alternate paths between MCI service nodes. Connections between customer locations are software-defined, making it easy to reconfigure. MCI HyperScope, an SNMP-based network management service, will furnish performance data and statistics for international customer locations."
HyperStream International Frame Relay is a digital, end-to-end, broadband packet virtual network service that is well suited for a variety of customer data applications, particularly LAN to LAN and LAN to Host computer and other common distributed processing and client server architectures. These configurations support SNA connectivity, interactive applications such as CAD/CAM and electronic mail, and bulk data transfers such as imaging and database backup. The common denominator in these applications is high-burstiness, variable bandwidth, and multi-point connectivity.
"MCI is aggressively extending the reach of HyperStream International Frame Relay to satisfy the growing demands of our global clients," explained Singh. "For high-speed bursty data applications, it is more flexible and economical than standard private line networks and allows customers to grow and change their networks more rapidly. We plan to extend the service to additional countries in the near future. HyperStream International Frame Relay adds to our global portfolio of switched and virtual data products and reinforces our product leadership in the private network business."
MCI Communications Corporation, headquartered in Washington, offers a full range of domestic and global telecommunications services. The company, with 1992 revenue of more than $10 billion is the second largest long distance provider in the United States and has more than 60 overseas offices in 55 countries and places.
