MCI DONATES STATE-OF-THE-ART TELECOMMUNICATIONS EQUIPMENT TO CAPITOL COLLEGE

LAUREL, Md., March 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Telecommunications engineering students at Laurel's Capitol College today took a step into the future of modern communications.
The college, which specializes in teaching students to meet businesses' technological engineering needs, began operating a full- scale, advanced fiber optics transmission system along with high- speed digital data equipment and a full-scale telephone network -- a gift from MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC).
"We are pleased to provide Capitol with this new, state-of-the- art laboratory," said Richard Liebhaber, MCI's chief strategy and technology officer. "We have had a close working relationship with Capitol since the opening of the Laurel campus in 1983, and we hope to continue it into the 21st century."
MCI engineers recently worked closely with the faculty and industrial advisory boards to identify the college's teaching needs and to select the appropriate equipment for the lab. The products of multiple hardware suppliers were selected so that when students graduate, they will have been taught on a range of manufacturers' equipment and be better prepared for jobs in voice, data and other telecommunications fields.
"The primary goal is to provide a lab that will serve as a `real world' working communications model," said William Troxler, president of Capitol College. "Our telecommunications laboratory is one of the few on our nation's college or university campuses that has such an array of advanced equipment."
In addition to the laboratory, MCI has donated a number of spectrum analyzers, level generators, voltmeters and other test equipment over the years. With the equipment and a new 405 megabit (MB) optical fiber switch, students will be able to establish and test voice and data transmission circuits from a central office to a simulated customer's premise, as they would in a real-world situation. The estimated value of this equipment is in excess of a half-million dollars.
Capitol College, located in Laurel, offers associate and bachelor's degrees in electrical engineering, engineering technology, engineering support and systems management and a master's degree in systems management.
MCI, headquartered in Washington, offers a full range of domestic and global telecommunications services through one of the world's largest state-of-the-art networks. With 1992 revenue of over $10 billion, the company is the second largest long distance provider in the U.S. and has more than 60 offices in 55 countries and places.
