DONATES $20,000 TO AMERICAN RED CROSS
MIAMI, Aug. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- A portable communications center outfitted with 24 phones and a satellite uplink facility is en route to south Florida from Richardson, Texas, MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) announced today. This mobile phone bank will be set up at a Red Cross site in south Dade County to provide free long distance phone calls for residents. It will travel with the Red Cross as the relief agency moves from location to location.
"This effort is being done in conjunction with our local people to provide relief for residents," said MCI's Dan Crawford, president of Network Services. "Additionally, we are contributing $20,000 to the American Red Cross and we will continue to look for other ways to assist the relief efforts as the local residents recover from the devastation of Hurricane Andrew.
"We accelerated construction of the mobile phone center this week so that we could ship it to Florida as soon as possible," said Crawford. "It will arrive in Florida sometime tomorrow and it will remain in the area until normal communications have been restored."
