MCI DISPATCHES MOBILE PHONE CENTER TO DES MOINES, IOWA, DONATES $20,000 TO AMERICAN RED CROSS

DES MOINES, Iowa, July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- A portable communications center outfitted with 24 phones and a satellite uplink facility is en route to Des Moines from Richardson, Texas, MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) announced today. This mobile phone bank will be set up outside a Red Cross shelter at the Western Hills Community School in West Des Moines to provide free long distance phone calls for flood victims, residents and emergency officials.
"This effort is being done in conjunction with our local people to provide relief for residents," said MCI's Dan Crawford, president of Network Services. "Additionally, MCI is contributing $20,000 to the American Red Cross and we will continue to look for other ways to assist the relief efforts as the local residents recover from the devastating Midwest flooding."
The tractor-trailer rig containing the emergency phone bank en route to rain soaked Iowa is the same truck sent to provide free long distance calls to victims of Hurricane Andrew last year. Like the operation in South Florida, the satellite uplink facility will enable MCI to offer free calls without adding an extra call to the local system in Iowa, already taxed with extensive calling in and out of the flooded Midwest.
"The mobile phone center will arrive in Iowa sometime today, and it will remain in the area as long as it is needed," said Crawford.
