MCI DEPLOYS CORNING DISPERSION-SHIFTED FIBER IN EXPANDED NETWORK

 WASHINGTON, May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) today announced a multi-year agreement with Corning to use its dispersion-shifted optical fiber in the long distance company's nationwide network. MCI was the first interexchange carrier to use single-mode fiber in 1983 and is the first to deploy dispersion- shifted fiber in its major domestic routes.
 MCI has already installed dispersion-shifted fiber in routes from Sacramento to Seattle and San Antonio to Austin, and will be laying the fiber in a major new route between Salt Lake City and Chicago to be completed by the end of this year.
 Corning's dispersion-shifted fiber is designed for use in the 1550 nanometer window, which allows high data rate signals to be transmitted almost twice as far as standard single-mode fiber. The increase in range will let MCI use fewer regenerators to boost the signals along the network, thereby reducing equipment requirements and system costs while improving reliability.
 Another advantage of dispersion-shifted fiber is its compatibility with the new generation of optical amplifiers, which boost transmission signals "optically" by eliminating the need to translate optical signals into electric signals before regeneration. MCI's use of optical amplifiers and Corning's dispersion-shifted fiber will permit simple, cost-effective capacity upgrades to MCI's network as the telecommunications industry continues to move toward higher transmission speeds.

 According to Clark Kinlin, Corning's manager of sales and marketing, "MCI challenged Corning to commercialize single-mode fiber 10 years ago, thereby leapfrogging the use of copper and microwave technologies for new systems. The resulting joint effort helped MCI initiate the first large scale deployment of single-mode optical fiber in North America. After much hard work, we're again technically poised to deliver a tremendous increase in network performance to MCI."
