MCI CONTINUES COMMITMENT TO CULTURAL COMMUNICATION & EDUCATION THROUGH EXCLUSIVE SPONSORSHIP OF MONTEREY JAZZ FESTIVAL

'93 Jazz Fest Marks Ninth Year For Sponsorship, Contributions To
Youth Music Education Fund Exceed Quarter Million Dollar Mark
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- In its ninth year as the exclusive sponsor of the Monterey Jazz Festival, MCI Communications Corp. is continuing its tradition of support for the Festival's Jazz Education Fund with a contribution that will bring its total donations to the fund to more than a quarter of a million dollars.
In addition, since becoming the event sponsor in 1984, MCI has donated hundreds of Festival tickets to the friends and family members of students competing in the Festival's California High School Jazz Band Competition. The winners of this year's competition, which reaches more than 11,000 students at over 500 schools, will be performing on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 20.
MCI will also be making it easy for each of the 35,000 jazz fans from around the world attending the Sept. 18-20 Festival to stay in contact with their friends and family too. The company will be providing free long distance phone calls to any point on the globe from three MCI Calling Booths located on the Festival grounds.
The Festival's Jazz Education Fund provides a unique, comprehensive music curriculum for aspiring junior high school, high school and community college musicians in Monterey County.
"MCI is proud to support the Monterey Jazz Festival and especially its music education programs," said MCI Western Regional Vice President for National Accounts Cindy Andreotti. "We see our contributions to the Jazz Education Fund, now in excess of a quarter of a million dollars, as an investment in the talents of our student musicians, as well as the preservation of this distinctively American form of music."
Andreotti will present Tim Jackson, general manager of the 36th annual Monterey Jazz Festival, with a $30,000 check for the Jazz Education Fund in the main arena on Saturday, Sept. 18.
Celebrating its 25th anniversary, MCI, the nation's second largest long distance company, is an active participant in numerous community- based education programs across the United States through the MCI Foundation. Foundation activities include math and science teacher training programs, text book distribution programs, and scholarship fund contributions. Of special interest to MCI are programs that link education and technology, like the MCI Homework Hotline, which provides students with toll-free 800 numbers that connect them directly to teachers who can assist with homework problems.
MCI, headquartered in Washington, D.C., offers a full range of domestic and global telecommunications services through one of the world's largest state-of-the-art networks. With 1992 revenue of $10.6 billion, the company is the second largest long distance provider in the United States and has more than 60 offices in 55 countries. MCI provides international calling from the United States to more than 250 countries and places.
