MCI COMMENCES VNET SERVICE BETWEEN THE U.S. AND SWEDEN

RYE BROOK, N.Y., Feb. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI International, in cooperation with Telekervet Sweden, today began virtual private network service between the United States and Sweden. The MCI Vnet VNC (Virtual Network Connection) interconnects with Telekervet Sweden's Unicall (IVPN) service and is the first Vnet link between the two countries.
"Telekervet is dedicated to supporting multinational companies in Sweden with effective and reliable means of international tele- communications," said Ingemar Wahlstrom, president of Swedish Telecom International, the Telekervet subsidiary responsible for international telecommunications. "The interconnection of our Unicall IVPN service with MCI is an important part of that commitment. Today, Telekervet has interconnections with 8 carriers and plans to have a total of 19 carriers in its IVPN network during 1993."
MCI's Vnet VNC service supports voice, facsimile and data. It also handles customized routing and access, internal dialing plans and on-net and off-net calls, while providing many of the features of a private network at the cost of switched services.
"A reliable, efficient telecommunications network is essential if a multinational company is to compete effectively in today's global markets," said Seth Blumenfeld, president of MCI International. "MCI's combined efforts with Telekervet Sweden were able to make this historic Vnet interconnection a reality. Our mutual customers will benefit from this new service far into the future." MCI has been a leader in providing networking services throughout the E.C. and recently announced several joint ventures in other parts of the world, including its Vnet interconnection to Norway with Norwegian Telecom International's VIP Net service.
The interconnection with Sweden brings MCI's total international Vnet VNC interconnections to 16. In addition to Telekervet Sweden, MCI currently offers Vnet VNC service with Hong Kong Telecom, BT, Australia's AOTC, Canada's Unitel, KDD Japan, ITJ Japan, and IDC Japan, Belgacom, PTT Telecom Netherlands, EMBRATEL Brazil, Norweigan Telecom International, Italcable, France Telecom, Mercury (UK), and Singapore Telecom. Negotiations continue between MCI and other major telecommunications administrations throughout the world.
First offered in 1985, MCI Vnet is used by many of the nation's Fortune 500 corporations as well as government institutions. MCI was also the first carrier to connect with BT's International FeatureNet service in November, 1990.
Telekervet Sweden is a national long distance carrier with operations throughout Sweden. The company provides data, text and voice communications, sound and video as signal carrier for radio and television broadcasters, telematics, and maritime communications. Telekervet Sweden's Virtual Private Network service currently supports abbreviated dialing, flexible capacity and configuration, tailored solutions, and effective cost control through management reporting.
MCI offers a full range of domestic and global telecommunications services through one of the world's largest advanced networks. The company, with 1992 revenues of nearly $11 billion, is the sixth largest international communications carrier in the world and has 67 overseas offices in 53 countries and places.
