MCI CIRCUITS FIRST TO BE ACTIVATED ON FIRST DIGITAL OPTIC SYSTEM BETWEEN THE U.S. AND RUSSIA

RYE BROOK, N.Y., May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI (NASDAQ: MCIC) and Intertelecom today inaugurated new digital fiber optic cable service and announced that the first digital phone calls between the United States and Russia were placed across its circuits.
MCI, operator of the second largest network in the United States, and Intertelecom, the telecommunications operator for the Russian Federation, were the first to activate fiber optic calls on the new routes connecting the United States. MCI and Intertelecom are joint owners in the new all-digital fiber optic cable system linking Copenhagen, Denmark, with Moscow and St. Petersburg in the Republic of Russia. The new fiber optic connection can support more than 60,000 simultaneous phone calls across the Atlantic Ocean, enabling fully digital connections between the U.S. and Russia. All telephone calls carried over this route connect to the new digital international gateway switches operated by Intertelecom, two of which are located in Moscow and one in St. Petersburg.
"The exchange of information between the United States and Russia is an essential requirement for a free market economy," said Seth Blumenfeld, president of MCI International. "The improvement of telecommunications between our two nations will offer the opportunity for the expansion of international trade and information. Our customers, many of whom are committed to the development of Russia, are a part of this effort to change Russia's economy and improve the lives of the Russian people." Mr. Blumenfeld continued, "MCI is dedicated to providing these customers with the network needed to support their growing telecommunications needs in this region."
"Russia is now connected to the world with the newest technology," said Oleg Belov, president of Intertelecom. "Our businesses can now exchange information on a global basis digitally, and our telephone subscribers can have the highest quality telephone calls when they call their friends and family." MCI and Intertelecom have plans to increase the amount of telephone circuits between the United States and Russia.
MCI, headquartered in Washington, D.C., offers a full range of domestic and global telecommunications services through one of the world's largest state-of-the-art networks. With 1992 revenue of more than $10 billion, the company is the second largest long-distance provider in the United States and sixth largest international communications carrier in the world with more than 60 overseas offices in 55 countries, Guam and Puerto Rico.
