MCI CABLE CUT BLOCKS OUT-OF-STATE CALLS FOR GTE CALIFORNIA CUSTOMERS
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- GTE California has been advised by MCI (NASDAQ: MCIC) that MCI experienced a major fiber- optic cable cut near Rialto, Calif. around noon today.
The cable cut has prevented GTE customers who subscribe to MCI's long-distance service from making long-distance calls out of state and to points east of Rialto. Customers also have been unable to receive calls from out of state or east of Rialto.
Although the incident immediately impacted the Palm Springs, Calif. area, GTE has received subsequent trouble reports about MCI long- distance service from customers in the Inland Empire. The event has not affected local calling.
The cable cut occurred about noon today when an unidentified person accidentally cut a major MCI fiber-optic cable, reportedly near Rialto.
MCI has informed GTE that service might be restored by 6 p.m. PDT tonight.
GTE customers who use MCI should contact the MCI operator -- dial 00 -- for alternate dialing instructions. Or, customers may call the phone number listed on the bottom of their MCI monthly bill for alternate long-distance dialing instructions.
The cut has impacted all GTE customers with MCI long-distance on calls to out-of-state destinations or to points east of Rialto.
GTE California does not carry long-distance interLATA or interstate calls. All GTE customers must subscribe to a long-distance carrier for this service.
GTE California, based in Thousand Oaks, provides local telephone service to 3 million customers in 330 communities, mostly in Southern California.
