MCI AWARDED MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR CONTRACT TO PROVIDE TRANSCONTINENTAL VOICE AND DATA CIRCUITS

WASHINGTON, April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) today announced it was selected to provide end-to-end digital connections for voice and data transmissions across the United States as well as between Canada and Mexico to a multilateral group of 32 European, Asian-Pacific and South American telecommunications carriers called the Multilateral Initiative.
Under the initial three-year, multi-million dollar contract, MCI will provide its Digital Passage service (DPS), which will enable these overseas telecommunications firms to offer uninterrupted international service to their customers. Based upon individual agreements with the carriers represented by the multilateral group, MCI can provide transcontinental circuits for service terms of up to 25 years. MCI was one of three firms selected to provide service to the multilateral group formerly served almost exclusively by AT&T.
MCI's DPS is offered exclusively to international communications carriers. The service entails digital circuit links across the United States, between MCI North American border crossings to Canada and Mexico, fiber optic cableheads at the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, and its satellite earth stations.
International transmissions originating and terminating outside the U.S. are routed over MCI's Digital Data Network (DDN), a specially provisioned subnetwork within MCI's nationwide digital backbone to provide very high-speed transmission at guaranteed service performance levels.
"The demand to exchange information globally has pushed the rapid deployment of digital technology from point-to-point pathways to worldwide communications networks," according to Seth Blumenfeld, president of MCI International.
"Our service award from the multilateral group is recognition that our Digital Passage service capitalizes on the benefits of these transport systems and adds another dimension to our global network capabilities. MCI currently provides global services in conjunction with all of the carriers in the Multilateral Initiative. This award further enhances our cooperative service relationship," said Blumenfeld.
As one of the fastest growing major international network carriers, MCI also offers Digital Passage service into Latin America and the Caribbean via an extensive satellite network. The company is one of the leading pioneers in fiber optic systems and was the first U.S. carrier to implement coast-to-coast fiber connections spanning the continent of North America, as well as providing the first long-haul SONET connectivity in the United States.
MCI Communications Corporation, headquartered in Washington, offers a full range of domestic and global telecommunications services through one of the world's largest state-of-the-art networks. The company, with 1992 revenue of more than $10 billion, is the second largest long distance provider in the United States and has more than 60 overseas offices in 55 countries and places.
