MCI AWARDED DATA COMMUNICATIONS SERVICES CONTRACT FOR NEW FEDERAL RESERVE NETWORK

WASHINGTON, April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago has awarded MCI a 10-year, multi-million dollar contract to provide circuits for a nationwide data communications network. The new FEDNET communications system will combine the networks of the 12 Federal Reserve district banks and three new consolidated centers (located in bank facilities) into one network.
FEDNET will be available 24 hours-a-day to allow the district banks to perform time-critical processing and to communicate with commercial bank users. In the event of a disaster at a district bank, the network will also provide connection to a disaster recovery facility.
MCI will offer the Federal Reserve Banks a variety of high speed data services including Fractional T1, dedicated T1 and T3. The services will give FEDNET high bandwidth capacity at speeds to rapidly move information such as the more than $1 trillion in interbank funds and securities transfers processed by the Federal Reserve on a daily basis.
"To meet the Bank's stringent requirement, FEDNET has a targeted availability of nearly 100 percent," said Jerry Edgerton, MCI's vice president of national accounts. "We also demonstrated MCI's ability to work with alternate access carriers and Bell Operating Companies (BOCS) to ensure the highest levels of diversity and redundancy."
MCI is responsible for circuit installation and maintenance and will work closely with the Federal Reserve's network management control center based at the Chicago Reserve Bank to configure and order the local telephone company (LEC) portion of the circuits. MCI will also continuously monitor advances in LEC diversity to guarantee the Federal Reserve of the most advantageous arrangement.
"In submitting our proposal for FEDNET, MCI exceeded the requirements in the RFP by drawing on our experience in providing reliable and redundant networks of similar scope to other customers," said Edgerton. "Although we already provide five of the 12 Federal Reserve Banks with voice and data services, this contract represents new business for MCI."
The Federal Reserve Banks are located in Atlanta; Boston; Chicago; Cleveland; Dallas; Kansas City; Minneapolis; New York; Philadelphia; Richmond; St. Louis; and San Francisco.
Over the past year MCI has won major contracts from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA LINCS), Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), and Citicorp.
MCI, headquartered in Washington, offers a full range of domestic and global telecommunications services through one of the world's largest state-of-the-art networks. With 1992 revenue of over $10 billion, the company is the second largest long distance provider in the United States and has more than 60 offices in 55 countries and places.
