MCI ANNOUNCES MCI MASTERS FOR THE UNIVERSITY RESALE MARKET

RYE BROOK, N.Y., July 19 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI today announced the availability of MCI Masters(sm), the first student resale service to provide true combined on and off-campus billing capabilities on a single platform. The new offering provides high quality, cost-efficient telecommunications services to students while generating significant revenue for the college or university with more than 2,500 total students, faculty or staff on or off campus.
"MCI Masters' flexible features will make it one of the most sought- after resale programs in the nation," said Barry Wagar, MCI National Accounts senior vice president, marketing. "It provides an innovative way for school administrators to generate revenues for additional student services and accommodate a growing, older, more independent student body," he added.
The versatile MCI Masters system resides in MCI's intelligent network and provides features for the end user that include: a personal identification number (PIN) for each student and an individual monthly bill; off-campus access to the MCI Masters platform through a convenient 800 number; account balance information, payment history and credit limit data via a special customer service 800 number; multi-lingual instructions available in Spanish, French, Chinese, Japanese and Arabic; and individual calling cards with convenient dialing instructions and customer service information.
All students, faculty and staff, regardless of whether they have their own phone, will have access to MCI Masters features, which no other program offers. Future enhancements will include:
 --broadcast voice mail
 --on-line debit capability
 --campus information line
 --remote registration
--corporate information hotline, for information regarding companies interviewing on campus.
Other new services for the education market:
MCI also announced MCI PhD(sm) (Practical High-Quality Distance Learning) and MCI Grads(sm) (Global Routing for Academic Data Solutions), two one-stop shopping packages for the college and university market. MCI PhD offers one-stop shopping for videoconferencing equipment and network services, providing end-to-end support for sales and service. Leasing as well as purchasing at cost- effective rates is provided through MCI VideoNet alliances with industry's leading vendors. MCI Grad offers a complete spectrum of MCI data services including virtual switched, dedicated and fast packet technologies on MCI's HyperStream(sm) Frame Relay and HyperStream SMDS platform.
"MCI PhD is a value-added videoconferencing solution that allows users to transcend the boundaries of the traditional classroom or faculty meeting site," said Wagar. "Its use could include bringing executives or professors at remote sites into the classroom, or allowing students to interview with companies across the nation without leaving campus," he added.
"And through MCI Grads, colleges and universities have access to the only U.S. carrier to offer HyperStream Frame Relay and HyperStream SMDS on the same network platform with a clear path to other cell-based technologies," Wagar continued. "This platform offers a common network management system and provides a CPE Rental Program with leading industry equipment providers."
MCI is a leader in providing innovative telecommunications programs to the education market, which is estimated at $2.7 billion a year, according to industry calculations. The market encompasses the 14 million students who attend 7,200 colleges and universities in the United States.
MCI, headquartered in Washington, offers a full range of domestic and global telecommunications services through one of the world's largest state-of-the-art networks.
