MCI ANNOUNCES ACTIVATION OF WORLD'S LARGEST CAPACITY UNDERSEA SYSTEM

RYE BROOK, N.Y., Nov. 30 ~PRNewswire~ -- MCI International, Inc., along with 24 international telecommunications carriers, today announced the activation of the world's largest capacity undersea fiber-optic system, Taino-Carib. MCI is the second largest U.S. investor in the $17-million repeaterless cable system.
Extending 186 kilometers and linking Puerto Rico, St. Thomas (U.S. Virgin Islands), and Tortola (British Virgin Islands), Taino-Carib will operate at 560 megabits (million bits of information) per second over six fiber pairs. This will allow the system to support up to 225,000 simultaneous phone conversations, or the equivalent in combinations of data, text, voice and video communications. This expanded capacity will significantly improve the quality and reliability of communications in the Caribbean.
In addition, Taino-Carib will be an essential communications link for the region because it will allow for interconnections with other existing and planned transatlantic cable systems, resulting in improved communications between the Caribbean, the United States, Central and South America and Europe.
Investors in the Taino-Carib system include telecommunications carriers from Argentina, Barbados, Brazil, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Hawaii, Italy, Japan, Leeward Islands, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, the United States and Venezuela.
MCI International, Inc. offers a full range of long-distance and international communications services, including "dial 1" service, the MCI Card, International 800 service, MCI fax, telex, MCI Mail electronic mail, and private lines. In addition to International Vnet, business services include Global Communications Service (GCS), worldwide calling to over 250 countries and places, MCI CALL USA, packet switching, private voice and data networks, and television transmission. The company, with revenue of nearly $10 billion, is the second largest long- distance provider in the United States and has 69 subsidiary and representative offices in 53 countries, Guam and Puerto Rico positioned to support the full range of global telecommunications services.
