MCI AND POLYCOM SIGN MARKETING AGREEMENT OFFERING ADVANCED TELECONFERENCING SOLUTION

WASHINGTON and SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI Communications Corp. (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) and POLYCOM, Inc. today announced a marketing agreement that combines MCI's Forum, a user- friendly conference calling service, with POLYCOM's SoundStation, a technologically advanced audioconferencing unit.
The two companies will jointly market POLYCOM's SoundStation product to MCI's Forum conferencing customers, and MCI Forum to SoundStation users. POLYCOM will sell and service its product through its authorized reseller network. As part of the joint agreement, POLYCOM is offering qualifying MCI customers a 30-day free trial of the SoundStation.
POLYCOM's SoundStation is an affordable conferencing product that overcomes the poor audio quality of speakerphones by allowing transmission in two direction simultaneously. This interactive capability permits clear communications in both directions, allowing a natural conversational flow even in the most animated conversations. The compact and elegant SoundStation is easy to install and use. It plugs into an analog phone line and provides a built-in dial pad similar to a standard telephone.
"MCI Forum users already enjoy the most comprehensive user-friendly service in the industry. By using a POLYCOM SoundStation, MCI Forum customers can take full advantage of MCI's technologically sophisticated service, which delivers higher audio quality than current speakerphones can utilize," said Barry Wagar, MCI senior vice president of marketing.
According to Brian Hinman, president, CEO and co-founder of POLYCOM, "there are two million conference rooms in the U.S. and our goal is to have a SoundStation in every one. This alliance with MCI will help us do that."
The MCI Forum conference calling service is backed by a fiber optic network and state-of-the-art bridging equipment, and features conference operators who handle all aspects of a conference call and a guarantee that calls start on time.
Conference calling is an immediate, personal way to conduct business, and is used in a variety of situations, such as sales presentations, contract negotiations, product announcements, securities analyst briefings, personnel training and customer problem solving.
