MCI AND OCTEL FORM MARKETING ALLIANCE

WASHINGTON and MILPITAS, Calif., Dec. 15, /PRNewswire/ -- MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) and Octel Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: OCTL) today announced a marketing alliance to address businesses' growing demand for customized 800 services to be used internally and for customer service applications. The business relationship pairs the global telecommunications resources of MCI with the voice processing expertise of Octel, the leading manufacturer of on-premises voice information processing systems.
Octel will offer discounts on its products to alliance customers that sign up for MCI 800 services and the installation Octel on-site voice processing system. Octel will offer an additional discount to businesses that select MCI as their 800 carrier during the first three months of the telecommunications industry's 800 Portability.
"More businesses are turning to voice information processing to insure maximum efficiency for critical customer service operations," said Jonathan Crane, president of MCI National Accounts.
Octel systems allow end-users to access multiple information sources during a single touch-tone telephone call. The systems will complement MCI's basic and enhanced 800 services by providing on-site voice processing options for customer service applications.
For example, a business can combine MCI 800 and Enhanced Call Router (ECR) services with an on-site Octel system so that calls are automatically forwarded to the appropriate individual or location to properly assist the caller. Another customer service application would allow callers to use their touch-tone telephone keypad to request that specific information be sent by facsimile or mail. This capability eliminates the need for callers to wait on hold for an available customer service representative.
"This alliance will greatly extend the services available to both MCI and Octel customers by offering a complete telecommunications solution for businesses," said Mike West, executive vice president of Octel. "We are pleased to pair with MCI, particularly with its reputation for high-quality, reliable products and customer service."
Octel is the ninth MCI marketing alliance agreement since the program was established in 1990. The alliance program was developed to allow MCI to work with select telecommunications industry leaders to provide customers with customized network transmission and equipment solutions.
Headquartered in Washington, MCI Communications Corporation offers a full range of domestic and global telecommunications services through one of the world's largest state-of-the-art networks. With 1991 revenue of nearly $10 billion, the company is the second largest long distance provider in the United States and has more than 60 overseas offices in 55 countries.
Octel Communications Corporation designs, manufactures and markets a complete line of voice information processing servers and software. These systems solve a range of communications problems by allowing callers to access multiple information sources -- voice, data, image -- during a single touch-tone telephone call. The servers are sold in North America, Europe and the Pacific Rim to small businesses, multi-site corporations, telephone companies and cellular service providers. Founded in 1982, Octel is headquartered in Milpitas.

/NOTE: Currently, businesses lose their specific 800 number if they change long distance carriers. In August 1991, the Federal Communications Commission ruled on 800 Portability to give businesses the option to switch their 800 carrier and retain the same number. The ruling will take effect in 1993./
