MCI AND NEWBRIDGE NETWORKS TO JOINTLY DEVELOP AND MARKET ADVANCED NETWORKING SOLUTIONS

WASHINGTON, Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) and Newbridge Networks Corporation (NASDAQ: NNCXF; TORONTO: NNC) today announced a marketing alliance to jointly develop and market high-performance private and public networking solutions to link corporate networks domestically and internationally.
The MCI and Newbridge sales forces will offer end-to-end customized network solutions, by combining the Newbridge suite of networking products with MCI's domestic and international voice and data services. The alliance offers customers flexible, one-stop shopping for network solutions and fully integrated support throughout the customer's network life cycle.
In announcing a sweeping strategic vision called networkMCI earlier this month, MCI indicated that a primary focus would be global data communications services. The business relationship announced today fits that vision by pairing MCI's strengths with those of Newbridge, one of the leading vendors of high-speed digital communications equipment solutions.
The alliance addresses the explosive growth in corporate networking requirements and the need to provide flexible, customized and cost- effective arrangements of network services, products and management options on a domestic or global basis.
A key advantage of alliance solutions derives from the superior intelligence built into the Newbridge network management platform, which can be controlled either by the customer or managed by MCI on an outsourced basis.
The market for corporate domestic and international networking solutions is approximately $13 billion and expected to grow over the next three to five years at an average rate of 10 to 15 percent, according to industry estimates.
"The complexities associated with managing private and switched corporate networks are growing exponentially, forcing businesses to look for ways to meet the increasing demands placed on their networks," said Mort Aaronson, MCI vice president for Large Accounts. "Our alliance with Newbridge will focus on solutions to meet the sophisticated needs of large customer networks and minimize the difficulties associated with managing multiple vendors."
Under the program, domestic and international MCI services include MCI HyperStream Frame Relay, domestic and international private line services, as well as MCI Vnet, 800 and Vision voice services.
Newbridge product offerings will include its Mainstreet family of multiplexers, channel banks, local area network (LAN) bridges and routers, frame relay products, ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) switches for high-speed data transmission, and comprehensive network management.
"This alliance represents the deepening of an already productive relationship. Over the past few years, MCI and Newbridge have successfully collaborated to provide numerous customers with network solutions that meet the most exacting standards, such as the Federal Aviation Administration's air control system network, LINCS (Leased Interfacility National Airspace Communications System)," said Mike Pascoe, president of Newbridge Networks Inc. "The combination of our comprehensive product line and rapidly evolving networkMCI capabilities should provide unsurpassed benefits to customers."
The MCI Strategic Alliance program, established in 1990, is comprised of select telecommunications industry leaders, who work with MCI to provide customized network transmission and equipment solutions.
MCI, headquartered in Washington, offers a full range of domestic and global telecommunications services through one of the world's largest state-of-the-art networks. With 1992 revenues of more than $10 billion, the company is the second largest long distance provider in the United States and has more than 65 offices in 55 countries and places.
Newbridge Networks is an international company which designs, manufactures, markets and services multimedia, standards-based networking products for global LAN and WAN applications, all manageable by a single, graphically rich network management system. Facilities are located in Canada, the United States, Europe and Asia.
