MCI AND HONGKONG TELECOM BEGIN VIRTUAL NETWORK SERVICE BETWEEN THE
 UNITED STATES AND HONG KONG
RYE BROOK, N.Y., May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI International, a subsidiary of MCI Communications Corporation ("MCI") (NASDAQ: MCIC), in conjunction with Hong Kong Telecom, today announced the launch of virtual private network service between the United States and Hong Kong.
Commercial availability of the virtual network service between the two countries began May 15, 1992. In 1991, MCI and HKT established an agreement to interconnect their respective international virtual networks, MCI Vnet Virtual Network Connection (VNC) and HKT VPN. The service has been in extensive beta testing for the past few months. Virtual network services such an MCI's Vnet and HKT's VPN provide the benefits of a private line network at lower per call rates than direct dial services.
Interconnect with HKT's VPN service brings MCI's total number of international Vnet agreements to 15.
HongKong Telecom's Virtual Private Network service currently supports abbreviated dialing, flexible capacity and configuration, tailored solutions, and effective cost control through management reporting.
MCI Vnet handles voice, facsimile and low speed data and supports customized routing and access, internal dialing plans as well as on-net and off-net calls.
"The efficiency and performance of a multinational company's telecommunications network is crucial to its success in a global economy," said Seth D. Blumenfeld, president of MCI International. "This interconnection between Hong Kong Telecom and MCI will enable companies in Hong Kong and the U.S. to operate as effectively and efficiently in distant markets as they do in local markets."
First offered in the U.S. in 1985, MCI Vnet is used by many of the nation's Fortune 500 corporations and government institutions. MCI was the first carrier to connect to British Telecom's FeatureNet service in November, 1990.
In addition to HKT and BT, MCI is currently offering Vnet VNC service with Australia's OTC, Canada's Unitel, Japan's KDD and Belgium's RTT. MCI has also announced Vnet connects with PTT Telecom Netherlands, Italcable, France Telecom, Mercury (U.K.) and Singapore Telecom. Telecom Canada, Mexico's Telmex and Brazil's Embratel will be available later this year. Negotiations continue between MCI and other major telecommunications administrations throughout the world.
MCI operates one of the largest telecommunications networks in the world and provides a wide range of international telecommunications services including direct dial voice to more than 200 countries and places, International Operator Services, MCI CALL USA, International 800 service, private voice and data networks, electronic mail, facsimile and telex. MCI subsidiaries and representative offices are in over 50 countries, Guam and Puerto Rico. They are positioned to provide and support the full range of global telecommunications services.
