MCI ACTIVATES VNET CONNECTION BETWEEN U.S. AND IRELAND

RYE BROOK, N.Y., July 19 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI International, in cooperation with Telecom Ireland, today began virtual private network service between the United States and Ireland. The MCI Vnet VNC (Virtual Network Connection) interconnects with Telecom Ireland's IVPN service and is the first Vnet link between the two countries.
MCI's Vnet VNC service supports voice, facsimile and data. It also handles customized routing and access, internal dialing plans and on-net and off-net calls, while providing many of the features of a private network at the cost of a switched service.
"For a multinational company to compete successfully in today's global markets, it must have access to a reliable, efficient telecommunications network," said Seth Blumenfeld, president of MCI International. "MCI's correspondent relationship with Telecom Ireland and carriers throughout the world have brought about historic interconnections that continue to facilitate this global competitiveness. As a result, our mutual customers will benefit from such carrier relationships far into the future."
MCI has been a leader in providing networking services throughout the E.C. and recently announced several joint ventures in other parts of the world to enhance the abilities of international businesses to communications.
Aidan Gordon, head of Telecom Ireland's International Division, stated, "IVPN is part of our evolving range of new international services, including Freefone, Telemarketing, and Ireland Direct, all of which are aimed at meeting the increasingly sophisticated needs of our customers. Also, we anticipate the launch of further new services in the coming months."
The interconnection with Ireland brings MCI's total international Vnet VNC interconnections to 18. MCI also has pending agreements with a number of other countries. First offered in 1985, MCI Vnet is used by many of the nation's Fortune 500 corporations as well as government institutions. MCI was the first carrier to connect BT's International FeatureNet service in November 1990.
In addition to Telecom Ireland, MCI currently offers Vnet VNC service with BT, Telestra Australia, Canada's Unitel, Japan's KDD, Belgacom, Italcable, PTT Telecom Netherlands, Singapore Telecom, France Telecom, Mercury (U.K.), Hong Kong Telecom, IDC Japan, Embratel Brazil, ITJ Japan, Norwegian Telecom and Telia Sweden. Vnet VNC service is also offered with Stentor through MCI's alliance in Canada. Negotiations continue between MCI and other major telecommunications administrations throughout the world.
Telecom Ireland is a national and international carrier and is committed to providing its customers with the highest quality telecommunications services. As well as offices throughout Ireland, Telecom Ireland has an office in Stamford, Conn. The carrier operates one of the world's most advanced digital networks and provides its customers with advanced services such as customized numbering plans, fiber routing for network calls, single point of contact for customer service, itemized billing, and effective cost-control through management reporting. Its Virtual Private Network service enables large multinational telecommunications users to integrate their locations with a single private network.
MCI, headquartered in Washington, D.C., offers a full range of domestic and global telecommunications services through one of the world's largest state-of-the-art networks.
