MCDONNELL DOUGLAS MD-11 RECEIVES JAA CERTIFICATION

MCDONNELL DOUGLAS MD-11 RECEIVES JAA CERTIFICATION
LONG BEACH, Nov. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- McDonnell Douglas (NYSE: MD)

has received certification for its MD-11 trijet from the European Aviation Authorities (JAA). The MD-11 is the first aircraft to complete a JAA joint certification.
This certification verifies that the long-range, wide-body MD-11 is in compliance with JAA requirements.
The JAA currently represents nearly 20 participating countries in Europe, including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Yugoslavia.
Certification from JAA follows a concentrated evaluation period during which members of the investigating team reviewed approximately 1,000 engineering data submittals in response to approximately 200 issues identified during their evaluation.
The JAA participated in numerous flights aboard the MD-11, including one leg of record-setting around-the-world flight in October 1990. On this leg, the MD-11 departed London and flew over the North Pole, landing at Yuma, Ariz., site of Douglas Aircraft Co.'s flight test center. The flight covered 7,000 miles in 13 hours.
The MD-11 has been in service for nearly a year. It obtained U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification last November. Deliveries of the aircraft began shortly after that.
During the MD-11 flight test and certification programs, five aircraft were flown nearly 2,500 hours. Two were dedicated to structural and performance testing, two performed avionics and systems development and testing, and the fifth was included for simulated airline operations, crew workload studies and tests of cabin systems and equipment.
McDonnell Douglas has firm orders and other commitments for more than 330 MD-11s. It has delivered 24 of the trijets to airlines in the United States, Europe and the Far East.
