MCDONNELL DOUGLAS F/A-18 WINS BOOLA-BOOLA AWARD

ST. LOUIS, March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Three F/A-18 Hornet strike fighter squadrons have made a clean sweep of the U.S. Navy Pacific Fleet's Fiscal Year 1992 Boola-Boola Award for excellence in air-to- air missile readiness.
All three squadrons are based at Naval Air Station Lemoore, Calif. The winning squadron is VFA-25 (Fist of the Fleet). Its commanding officer is Cdr. Carl Simmons. VFA-25 is the first strike fighter squadron to win the award.
First runner-up is VFA-94 (Mighty Shrikes), under the command of Cdr. William Godwin, and second runner-up is VFA-22 (Fighting Redcocks), commanded by Cdr. James Knight.
"Winning this coveted award is indicative of squadron professionalism and an intense desire to strive for combat-ready status in all ordnance-related events," said Vice Adm. Rudy Kohn, commander of Naval Air Pacific. "The Fist of the Fleet, VFA-25, can be justifiably proud of having set the pace with the best fighter/strike fighter weapons systems performance in the Pacific Fleet during fiscal year '92."
Capt. J.B. Singleton, commander of Strike Fighter Wing Pacific, commended "all Strike Fighter Wing Pacific squadrons for their outstanding showing in
this year's competition sweeping the top three in AirPac. Additional thanks," he said, "goes to the Strike Fighter

Weapons School for their aggressive support of air-to-air missile firings in their comprehensive no-notice program."
The Boola-Boola award recognizes the Pacific Fleet fighter or strike fighter squadron that demonstrates the highest capability to maintain and use air-to-air missile weapons systems during the fiscal year. Scores are based on a squadron's ability to deliver air-to-air missiles on target. The F/A-18 squadrons were delivering AIM-9 and AIM-7 missiles. The scoring is weighted toward the maintenance aspect of missile shooting to emphasize increased full weapon system readiness.
The first Boola-Boola Award was presented in 1982. The first- place trophy is donated by Hughes Aircraft Co.
The F/A-18 Hornet Strike Fighter that VFA-25, VFA-94 and VFA-22 fly is a versatile, multimission fighter and attack jet that has been in service with the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps for 10 years. More than 850 Hornets have been delivered to the Navy and Marine Corps and more than 1,160 have been delivered worldwide. Other countries that fly the F/A-18 are Canada, Australia, Spain and Kuwait.
Prime contractor McDonnell Douglas (NYSE: MD) manufactures the F/A-18 in St. Louis. Principal subcontractor Northrop builds the center and aft fuselage, General Electric provides the engines and Hughes supplies the radar. The entire F/A-18 program encompasses more than 2,000 supplier companies in 44 states.
