MCDONNELL DOUGLAS CONTINUES TO EXPAND FAMILY
OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES FLYING MD 500 SERIES
LONG BEACH, Calif., Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 50 law enforcement agencies nationwide now fly nearly 120 McDonnell Douglas MD 500 Series helicopters.
And a growing number of agencies are modernizing their fleets with the newest member of the series -- the MD 520N, which features the revolutionary NOTAR(TM) system for anti-torque and directional control.
The Glendale and Huntington Beach police departments in California this week became the second and third law enforcement agencies in the U.S. to accept MD 520N helicopters, the world's quietest helicopters.
And according to Don Bachali, McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Co.'s law enforcement specialist, several other agencies are seriously considering the MD 520N for their airborne law enforcement requirements. Bachali said those agencies include some that do not currently fly MD 500 Series helicopters.
Currently, McDonnell Douglas has a backlog of more than 160 MD 500 Series helicopters, including options, with many of them scheduled to be delivered within the nation's law enforcement community.
The Phoenix Police Department, which flies seven MD 520Ns, became the first to operate the new helicopter last October.
Since the MD 520N's introduction, McDonnell Douglas Helicopter has delivered nearly 30 of the aircraft to customers around the world, and expects to deliver 48 MD 520Ns this year.
Many Agencies Seeking To Set The Pace
"We're talking very seriously with a number of law enforcement units that fly older McDonnell Douglas or Hughes helicopters -- or who simply have become more aware of the MD 520N's unique capabilities," Bachali said. "More and more experienced pilots are recognizing the value of the NOTAR system."
The NOTAR system, which uses pressurized air to replace the tail rotor in conventional helicopters, makes flying safer and quieter and cuts pilot workload.
Reducing pilot workload, Bachali stressed, is a major benefit for law enforcement pilots, who must be alert and in full command while on patrol.
"By not battling the wind while searching for a victim or suspect, for example," Bachali said, "a pilot expends less energy and is less fatigued. That can mean the difference between capturing or missing a criminal late in the shift."
Bachali also cited the benefit of the MD 520N's low-noise signature.
"When flying at 500 feet while on routine patrol, it's nearly impossible to hear the helicopter from the ground," Bachali explained. "That doesn't bode well for criminals."
