MCDONNELL DOUGLAS, GENERAL DYNAMICS RECOGNIZE LUCAS
 FOR STATISTICAL PROCESS CONTROL UTILIZATION
FARNBOROUGH, England, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- McDonnell Douglas Missiles Systems Co. (NYSE: MD), St. Louis, has awarded Lucas Aerospace Power Equipment of Aurora, Ohio, its Statistical Process Control (SPC) "silver" level designation. This award signifies that SPC is being applied on critical processes and that the overall philosophy of continuous improvement is being actively applied. This achievement is recognized by all divisions within the entire McDonnell Douglas Corp.
General Dynamics Convair Division, San Diego, also has granted Lucas Aerospace Power Equipment an SPC system approval recognizing that an SPC system/philospophy is an integral part of the business objectives of the recipient. This accomplishment gives Lucas Aerospace Power Equipment corporate-wide recognition within General Dynamics (NYSE: GD).
In addition to receiving these two new awards, Lucas Aerospace Power Equipment was the first validated SPC Supplier for Martin Marietta (NYSE: ML).
SPC is a method which gives confidence that components produced are within tolerance, without having to measure every component. It is associated with the theme of controlling the process not the product and is a form of feedforward control. The concept focuses on getting it right the first time and reduces scrap rates to zero.
Lucas Aerospace Power Equipment is part of the international group of business units that comprise the Aircraft Systems Division which, in addition to its electric power generation capabilities, designs, develops and manufactures equipment and systems for ice protection, missile casings and actuation, cockpit and cabin windows and cargo handling systems.
Lucas Aerospace is a leading supplier of aerospace systems and equipment with sales of $1.3 billion and operating facilities across Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific, as well as associated companies, joint ventures, marketing and customer support facilities around the world. The company is a subsidiary of Lucas Industries plc -- an international organization serving the aerospace, automotive and other selected markets, with sales of $4 billion.
