 MCDONALD'S CONTINUES CENTRAL EUROPEAN EXPANSION
WITH ITS FIRST RESTAURANT IN POLAND
CHICAGO, June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- McDonald's today announced the opening of its first restaurant in Warsaw, Poland, marking the 62nd country where McDonald's does business and joining Czechoslovakia as the second Central European country to open this year.
"McDonald's started out as an American dream 37 years ago," said James Cantalupo, president and CEO of McDonald's International. "Today, that dream is a reality in Warsaw, throughout Central Europe and in more than 12,000 communities around the world."
McDonald's opened its first restaurant outside the United States in Canada 25 years ago this month. McDonald's entered Central Europe in 1977 with its first restaurant in Austria, and now operates nearly 50 restaurants in Austria, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Poland.
"Central Europe has exciting growth potential for McDonald's. We expect to add about 15 restaurants a year, and will more than double our current number of restaurants in the area by 1995," said Cantalupo. "During that period, we plan to invest over $100 million in Central Europe to build restaurants and supply and distribution infrastructures. Worldwide our expansion plans include adding 400 to 500 restaurants outside of the U.S. annually over the next five years."
The Warsaw McDonald's is located on the famed Marszalkowska Street, across from the Palace of Culture. The two-story restored building will seat nearly 400 customers and will create employment for approximately 500 workers. As it does all over the world, McDonald's worked with local suppliers to source as many locally produced ingredients for its menu as possible.
The Warsaw restaurant will be operated by Polish licensee, Andrzej Konopski, and his wife, Natalia.
"We are so excited to have this opportunity to introduce McDonald's to the people of Warsaw," said Konopski. "We believe that McDonald's will be good for Poland and Poland will be good for McDonald's."
McDonald's Central Europe joins other rapidly expanding regions such as Europe, Latin America, and Asia Pacific in contributing to systemwide sales outside of the U.S. that reached $7.5 billion in 1991.
McDonald's is the world's leading foodservice organization with more than 12,000 restaurants serving customers in 62 countries. In 1991, systemwide sales reached $19.9 billion. About 80 percent of McDonald's restaurant businesses are owned and operated by independent entrepreneurs.
