MCDERMOTT, WILL & EMERY ANNOUNCES MERGER WITH WASHINGTON TAX SPECIALTY FIRM LEE, TOOMEY & KENT

WASHINGTON, Nov. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Two of the nation's pre-eminent tax law practices today announced that they intend to merge. Washington's Lee, Toomey & Kent, Chartered, a tax and employee benefits specialty firm, and McDermott, Will & Emery, a 500-lawyer international firm, have agreed in principle to join forces, effective Jan. 1, 1994.
The merger will bring the number of lawyers practicing tax law at McDermott, Will & Emery nationwide to 120. Lee, Toomey & Kent's 17 attorneys, specializing in domestic and international tax and employee benefit matters, represent an important addition to McDermott, Will & Emery's existing Washington office, currently numbering 83 lawyers.
"The merger of our two firms will provide extraordinary benefits to the clients of both firms," said MW&E Chairman Larry Gerber. "We view this step as a unique, perhaps once-in-a-lifetime, opportunity."
"This merger enhances the respective strengths of both firms," added Larry E. Shapiro, a director of Lee, Toomey & Kent. "McDermott, Will & Emery has built its national reputation in large part because of its excellent tax work over the last 60 years. Together, we will be able to offer our clients the broadest range of tax services."
"Lee, Toomey & Kent has been a nationally-recognized, quality tax firm for over 40 years; the merger represents a great opportunity to jointly deliver superb tax services," said Alan J. Olson, head of MW&E's Tax Department.
Charles R. Work, partner-in-charge of MW&E's Washington office, said "The addition of the excellent attorneys at Lee, Toomey & Kent will enhance our ability in the Washington office to deliver the most sophisticated tax legal services."
In addition to Washington, McDermott, Will & Emery has U.S. offices in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York and Newport Beach, Calif.; overseas offices in Tallinn (Estonia) and Vilnius (Lithuania); and associated (independent) offices in London and Paris.
