MCCAW AND MOBILECOMM JOIN FORCES

JACKSON, Miss., March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- MobileComm, a BellSouth Company, today announced a joint marketing effort with McCaw Cellular Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: MCAWA), Paging Division to sell pagers in retail outlets.
The announcement signals the expansion of MobileComm's PersonalPager retail division to every major metropolitan area in the U.S. representing over 95 percent of the population.
MobileComm currently markets its PersonalPager in more than 10,000 retail outlets throughout the country including Wal-Mart, Radio Shack, Service Merchandise, Pep Boys, Standard Brands, Lechmere, Hecht's Department Stores, Rich's Department Stores and Hi-Fi Buys. In addition, Kmart distributes pagers for the RAM/BellSouth Enterprises paging joint venture. McCaw will bring an additional 16 of the top 100 markets to the current retail program.
MobileComm is the first paging company to utilize Electronic Data Interface (EDI) for simple, paperless administration. EDI gives the retailer control over order processing, pager inventory and billing with a direct computer link-up with MobileComm's Distribution Center. MobileComm is the only company offering this service to its customers.
"McCaw is very pleased to join MobileComm in this joint retail marketing effort," said John Chapple, president of McCaw Paging Division. "MobileComm pioneered the retail distribution of pagers and we are happy to be a part of their program."
"Our joint retail effort with McCaw means that we can now bring the resources of two major companies together to serve the retailers' needs in virtually every metropolitan area," said Steve Pazian, MobileComm president and CEO. "We are excited to have such a quality company join forces with us to provide the retailer with a convenient way of selling pagers.
"Unlike some pager retail programs, MobileComm's and McCaw's program provides service directly to the end-user on our own networks," Pazian added. "Service after the sale is key to consumer acceptance of this product. MobileComm and McCaw take care of our customers locally, in a personal manner -- not over the phone through a third party."
MobileComm also markets nationwide paging through SkyMall's catalog with a circulation of over 4 million. Other national retail distribution for nationwide paging includes Sharper Image, Attitudes, Radio Shack, Damark and Hello Direct. "We are continuing to creatively pursue other less traditional distribution channels to reach our target for MobileComm Nationwide Messaging," Pazian said.
The agreement provides that McCaw will be the exclusive service provider in many of their markets for the Swatch Piepser, the world's smallest wristwatch pager. Swatch will introduce a digital display Piepser in the second quarter of 1993. Other pagers sold through the retail program are manufactured by Motorola, Uniden and Panasonic.
New markets McCaw adds to MobileComm's PersonalPager retail program are Anchorage, Alaska; Seattle; Tulsa, Okla.; Corpus Christi, Texas; Minneapolis/St. Paul; Denver; Fresno, Calif.; Las Vegas; Kansas City, Mo.; Oklahoma City; Portland, Ore.; Wichita, Kan.; Tacoma, Wash.; McAllen, Texas; Fort Smith, Ark.; and Walnut Creek, Calif.
McCaw Cellular Communications, Inc. is the nation's fifth-largest paging service provider with paging operations in 42 markets across the United States. Headquartered in Kirkland, Wash., McCaw has been providing paging service for nearly 20 years.
A subsidiary of BellSouth, MobileComm has been marketing pagers through retail channels for four years and, with its affiliates, is the second-largest paging company in the United States. Based in Jackson, Miss., MobileComm has been providing paging and voice messaging services in markets coast-to-coast for more than 20 years.
